“Absolutely not, General. I’m in this until the end,” Bo said, but he was disheartened at the quit he saw in his client. When he came back the following day to alert Helen that he’d filed a civil lawsuit against Zannick for sexual assault, Helen didn’t even smile.
“He’ll buy his way out of that, Bo.”
“No, he won’t. Lona won’t allow it.”
She shook her head. “At the end of the day, everyone has a price. Lona and Mandy Burks are good but damaged people, and if they can recover a hefty sum and avoid the stress and uncertainty of a trial, they’d be fools not to settle.” She paused and smiled at him. “Bo, you yourself will eventually advise Lona to take the money and run.”
He didn’t argue. Instead, he hung his head. “And Zannick will skate.”
Now, a month later and twenty-four hours from the start of her trial, there was a question on the table. Bo gazed at his rail-thin client, trying to think of the most positive way he could answer her without lying to her. “No,” Bo finally said. “I wouldn’t say that we are screwed. We just—”
“Don’t have any facts to back up any of our alternative theories,” Helen interrupted, raising her eyebrows in challenge. “Right?”
“Right,” Bo conceded. “Hooper is still digging. You’ve read his reports on Butch, Terry Grimes, and Lou Horn, haven’t you?”
“Yes, and it’s all fascinating. Just like his treatise on Zannick. But I can’t connect the dots to Butch’s murder.”
Bo sighed. “Neither can I.”
“Then we’re screwed, Counselor.”
“They still have to prove their case,” Bo said. “They have the burden of proving beyond a reasonable doubt that one of the most prominent citizens in this county—a public servant for two decades, a woman who has brought numerous killers to justice as the district attorney general—brutally murdered her husband in cold blood.” Bo paused. “They’ll have to do that without a murder weapon, as none has been located, and without any eyewitness to the crime. All they will bring to court is circumstantial evidence.”
Helen gave a weak smile. “I like it, but save the theatrics for your opening statement.”
“That is my opening statement. No murder weapon. No eyewitness. No murder.”
