  88. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“That’s good,” Helen said, maintaining her prosecutorial tone. “Because I need to see him too. What the hell is going on, Ty? Do you guys need three vehicles and six officers to tell me to see Hank? And if he needs to talk with me so bad, why haven’t I received anything on my dispatch radio?” Helen gestured at the system that was installed in her government-issued car, the same as it was in the deputies’, and felt a cold tickle run down her arms. Why haven’t I received a dispatch? she thought, knowing that her instincts had been dead-on this time. She decided to press the issue. “Look, it’s been a long day, and I’m going to go home and change out of my court clothes. I’ll call Hank on my way.”

“I’m afraid I can’t let you do that, ma’am,” Ty said.

Helen gazed into the officer’s determined blue eyes.

“The hell you can’t,” Helen said. “I’m the district attorney general of this county as well as the counties of Maury, Wayne, and Lawrence. I don’t need your permission to go home. Now stand down, Deputy.”

Helen made a motion to put the car in gear, and when she did, Dodgen drew his weapon. “General, please step out of the vehicle.”

“What in the world is wrong with you, Ty?”

Ty Dodgen, who had always been one of Helen’s favorite officers, stuck his chin out and stood his ground. “We have a warrant for your arrest, General.”

“My arrest? What are you talking about? My arrest for what?”

Before Dodgen could respond, Helen saw another figure approaching the vehicle. The deputy, still holding his weapon aimed at Helen, took a step back, and Sheriff Hank Springfield took his place. The sheriff wore a rain slicker over his uniform, and water dripped off the brim of his hat.

“Hank,” she managed, forcing her voice to remain steady. “What—?”

“General Lewis, you are under arrest for the murder of Frederick Alan Renfroe,” Hank said, his voice low and cold as ice. “Please step out of the vehicle and place your hands behind your head.”

As the sun began to rise over the Hazel Green farm, Bocephus Haynes awoke to hot and foul breath on his neck, face, and nose followed by the coarse feel of his dog’s tongue licking all three areas. When he opened his eyes, he was inches away from the soulful gaze of Lee Roy Jordan McMurtrie. The dog nudged Bo’s cheek with his cold nose and started licking again, burying his white-and-brown head into Bo’s neck.
