“Denied,” Connelly said. “Call your next witness, Mr. Haynes.”
“Your Honor, the defense rests.”
Two hours later, after closing arguments were delivered by both sides and the jury instructions were read by Judge Connelly, the jury was given the case.
They were out all of eight minutes before knocking on the deliberation room door and announcing they’d reached a unanimous verdict.
Once the jury was back in the courtroom, Judge Connelly asked the parties to stand and then addressed the foreperson. “Has the jury reached its verdict?”
“Yes, Your Honor,” the foreman said, clearing his throat. “We the jury, on the charge of first-degree murder, find the defendant . . . not guilty.”
Bo closed his eyes and then felt hands and arms wrapping around him. “You did it, Bo. You did it.” It was Lona Burks. His strawberry-blonde assistant had tears in her eyes. Bo hugged her back and walked across the courtroom. He extended his hand to Sack Glover, but the prosecutor wouldn’t take it. “I’m going to write you up for this, Bo. Get ready for a third suspension.”
“Go for it,” Bo said, looking past the prosecutor to Sheriff Hank Springfield, who did shake his hand.
“Congratulations, Bo,” Hank said.
Bo strode back to the defense table, hoping to embrace his client, but General Lewis was nowhere to be found. “Where’d she go?” Bo asked Lona.
Lona pointed toward the double doors. “She’s gone.”

Six hours after the not-guilty verdict was rendered, Chief Frannie Storm and a team of sheriff’s deputies located the computer stolen from Butch Renfroe’s house in the attic of a hunting cabin that Terry Grimes owned in Elkton, Tennessee. Though an attempt to erase the information on the computer had been made, an IT specialist inspected the computer and was able to recover several of the files, including a tape of Terry and Lou Horn having sex with several women in a hotel room and an Excel spreadsheet saved under the name “Ring” with a list of names and payments.
Grimes was arrested on charges of first-degree murder, burglary, and prostitution. Horn was charged with prostitution.

Bocephus Haynes celebrated his first trial victory in five years by splitting a six-pack of beer with Albert Hooper. After both men were sufficiently buzzed, Hooper said he wanted to see what was on the infamous VHS tape that Bo had dangled in front of the jury several hours earlier.
“Wait a minute, dog. Are you telling me that you haven’t watched the tape yet?”
“I didn’t have time. I just saw the folder labeled ‘Friday afternoon, Sands Hotel.’”
“Do you have a VCR?”
Hooper giggled and went to his car, returning with an actual VCR. He hooked it up to the TV in Bo’s office and pushed the tape in the slot. “Ready?”
“Where in the hell did you get a VCR?”
“I borrowed it from the Giles County Library this afternoon so we could watch the tape.”
