Instead of walking back towards the sweat lodge then along the track to the hotel, Damian carried her the long way round. As soon they were off the rough ground Jenna asked him to set her down.
‘What kind of car is it?’ she asked him.
‘A blue Nissan Micra.’
‘Okay.’ She nodded. ‘I’ll grab some stuff and meet you round the front of the hotel. I can’t … I can’t thank you enough.’ In the light of the hotel she could see his face again. He looked pale and drawn and there was worry in his eyes. ‘I mean it.’ She touched him on the arm. ‘You’ve saved my life.’
He shook his head dismissively. ‘Get going, and make sure you don’t run into Erica.’
Back in the hotel room, Jenna didn’t turn her back to the door once. She could hear voices outside and footsteps thundering down the path that led through the chalets. Every few seconds a burst of light from a torch would flare in the window and her heart would leap into her throat. Was Erica looking for her? Were the police?
She tore off her dressing gown, grabbed a pair of jeans from the floor and pulled them on. She didn’t bother with underwear. Instead, she pulled a jumper over her bikini top, yanked on her trainers and snatched her day bag from the bed and slung it across her body. She looked at her suitcase, wide open in the corner of the room, the contents spilling onto the floor. Taking it with her would be too risky. She’d be too conspicuous, dragging it behind her as she made her escape.
Damian started the engine as Jenna slid into the seat next to him. ‘Are you all right? Not feeling woozy or dizzy or anything?’
The worry in his eyes hadn’t dimmed and she knew he thought running away was a bad idea but she didn’t have the strength to justify her decision. He thought she should go to the police to report Erica but she was too spent to sit in a police station and tell a stranger what had happened. They’d want to know why Erica had attacked her, and then she’d have to tell them about Tom. She didn’t want to have to pick through the bones of his lies.
She looked across at Damian, gripping the steering wheel. ‘Are you still drunk from earlier?’
‘Do you care?’
‘No. Let’s go.’
