‘Right, right.’ He runs a hand over his hair, although it’s already slicked into place. ‘Maybe we need to ask the other person on your row to swap places with me. That way you can sit in the middle and hold my hand too.’
‘Are you scared of flying?’
‘No.’ He laughs, his gaze flicking from her face to her chest. ‘I just want to spend some time with you.’
‘How about you spend some time with Bessie instead? I’m sure she’ll hold your hand.’ She catches the eye of the woman sitting next to Damian. She’s mid- to late sixties with pink hair, clashing red lipstick, enormous earrings and the most colourful kaftan Jenna’s ever seen.
‘Ooh, yes. Of course I will.’ Bessie shoots out a hand, heavy silver rings glinting on every finger, and clasps Damian’s hand. ‘Where would you like me to put it dear?’ She winks lasciviously at Jenna.
‘I’d better get back to Erica.’ She ignores Damian who’s trying to catch her eye. ‘Enjoy the rest of the flight and don’t do anything I wouldn’t.’
Damian snorts. ‘I’d love to know what that is.’
But Jenna has already moved off. As she walks down the aisle she can feel him watching her; his gaze resting as heavily on her bum as his hand did on her thigh.
Chapter 3
Now
KATE
Kate touches the brake as the prison comes into view at the end of the road. Even from this distance she can see the mass of bodies crowding the entrance to the car park: journalists, photographers, a camera crew.
She knew the press would be waiting; Tom’s face has been splashed all over the news for the last couple of days. Somehow she’s going to have to angle him through the maelstrom without him saying a word. She’s been schooling him for weeks. During every telephone call she’s told him to keep his head down and say nothing, but she knows Tom; if a journalist presses the right button he’ll respond.
