Jubilation burns in Fran’s chest – she’s done it, she’s solved the mystery. One person didn’t murder Jenna, all three of them did. They’ve as much as admitted it. She taps her pockets, clumsily feeling for her phone. She’s going to call the police, have them taken in for questioning. Why isn’t Caroline smiling jubilantly at her? It’s done. It’s over. Jenna can finally rest in—
‘To Tim Chambers and Bessie Grange.’ Phoenix raises his empty glass.
Renata swipes at her eyes. ‘To Bessie and Tim.’
‘Bessie and Tim,’ Damian repeats.
Fran shakes her head. What are they talking about? Who are Tim Chambers and Bessie Grange? What are they talking about? She screws her eyes shut and digs around in her brain. She knows those names. Why does she know them?
Her blood runs cold.
The Gozo three didn’t drink because they killed Jenna. They drank because they dragged Tim and Bessie’s bodies out of the sweat lodge. They watched their friends die.
‘I’m … I’m …’ She tries to say she’s sorry – for asking something so insensitive, for putting them through so much pain – but before she can finish her sentence, her stomach twists violently and she vomits all over her thighs.
Chapter 34
Then
JENNA
Jenna can’t sleep. She’s been lying beneath the cool, starched hotel duvet for hours, twisting and shifting, unable to get comfortable as Erica snuffles softly in her sleep in the next bed. Just a few hours earlier, Jenna felt light and happy as she left her session with Tom. After she opened up about her family situation, Tom got her to do a breathing exercise to make her feel more grounded, then a visualisation where she had to imagine blowing all of her fears into a balloon and then letting go of it. Finally, he had her relive the experience of finding out that she wasn’t related to her dad whilst Tom moved his fingers in the air and she followed them with her eyes. It was Integral Eye Movement Therapy, he told her afterwards, and when she dug into herself, searching for the deep pain that had been weighing her down for months, she couldn’t locate it. It wasn’t gone for good though, Tom told her. She’d need more sessions and there was more work Jenna would have to do outside of the retreat to help heal herself.
