‘Gone.’ Damian’s face was slick with sweat, his cheeks and forehead grubby with dirt. ‘He did a runner, took off in the direction of the town. The police are here.’
‘The others.’ She twisted in his arms, trying to get free. ‘I need to help. I can do CPR. I can—’
‘No. You can’t. You need someone to check you over.’
He started to walk then and she juddered and jolted as he carried her away from the cliff edge and back towards the sweat lodge. With every step, her mind cleared and her anxiety increased. Could she be part of the reason that two of the group were dead? Several people had been struggling to breathe, even while she was in the tent, and then she’d left and Tom and Kate had followed her. Erica wasn’t well but she was right about that. She could be there now, colluding with Kate, creating an alibi for the attack, turning the others against her, telling them that Jenna was the reason that two people were dead – Jenna, who’d slept with a married man and tried to steal him away from his wife. Shame surged through her. He’d manipulated, seduced and tricked her. And then he’d run away from the people who needed him most.
She squeezed Damian’s arm. ‘Put me down.’
He slowed his pace and looked down at her. ‘You all right?’
‘I need to get out of here.’
‘No problem. I’ll take you back to your room after you’ve seen a medic and talked to the police. You need to tell them what Erica—’
‘No, Damian. Listen to me. I don’t want to see a medic or the police. I don’t want to see anyone. I just want to leave. Here. Gozo. I need to go.’ She could no longer see his face in the darkness but she could tell by his breathing that he was listening. ‘You were right about Tom and Kate. It was all a game and I’m not going to play it anymore. Please, just help me get out of here.’
She felt his arms tighten around her as he deliberated and she tensed too. If he insisted on carrying her back to the sweat lodge to see a medic she’d have to hurt him to get free. She didn’t want to but—
‘I’ve got a car.’ His voice cut through her thoughts. ‘I rented one yesterday when you lot were dicking around doing one of Tom’s bullshit tasks. I’ll drive you wherever you need to go.’
She sighed with relief. ‘Thank you. Oh Damian, thank you.’
‘So, where are we going?’
‘To the ferry. I need to get some stuff from my room first though.’
‘No problem.’
