1. How did your opinion of Kate change as the story progressed? Did you feel sympathy for her at any point?
2. Geraldine kept a secret from her husband and daughters for a very long time. If she’d revealed it earlier do you think it would have altered the family dynamic in any way?
3. Much of Fran and Jenna’s ire was directed towards Geraldine. Was it deserved? Do you think relationships between mothers and daughters are inherently more fractious than between fathers and daughters? Why?
4. How do you feel about Tom? Was he a browbeaten victim of Kate’s ambition or a self-absorbed, responsibility-shirking cheat? And were his feelings for Jenna real?
5. Fran and Jenna barely had a relationship when Jenna disappeared. Was that the fault of circumstances, their age gap, their personalities or something else?
6. After Jenna discovered that Tom was married and that he’d fled the scene after the sweat lodge deaths she decided to walk away from him forever. Could they have had a relationship or do you agree with her statement that two broken people can never make a relationship work?
7. Do you think Jenna was justified in letting her family believe she was dead?
8. In the one-on-one sessions Tom spent a lot of time talking to Jenna and Geraldine about their pasts. Do you think his sessions helped either of them? What’s your view on self-help and therapy? Do you need to come to terms with your past in order to have a happy life?
9. What did you think of Fran? In what ways did she change over the course of the novel? And what kind of future would you like for her?
10. Damian was the true hero of Her Last Holiday. Discuss.
