Next to me, Kane chuckled. “She’s fucking crazy.”
“I’m not sure making him madder is the way to go,” I mumbled, and my thumb found its way to my teeth. I nibbled on it, a nervous habit I could never quite kick, but listening to Lincoln’s voice, so damn angry, not the same patient man I used to know, burned through me.
How could I have been stupid for so long? So blind?
Kane’s hand on my back tensed, like he knew my train of thoughts.
“You know, Heather. I’ve always thought you were a whore. A beautiful one, but a whore nonetheless. When Emmersyn stops throwing a fucking tantrum, I’m going to make sure she never sees you again…”
“Oh…” Heather said, voice now normal. “Does this mean you’ll pay me to fuck you, too? I hear you like worn out, used pussy.”
Poor Steve. The security guard’s face blanched as Heather and Lincoln volleyed back and forth.
“Asshole,” Kane rasped. “If he calls her a whore again, I might lose my shit.”
“Fuck you.” Came through the line loud and clear right before Heather laughed.
Loudly.
“Hey pencil dick. I know you think you’re such a hot shit and all, but I should tell you something.”
“What?”
“I have Emmersyn on speaker on FaceTime and she’s heard every lovely, beautiful word you’ve just said to me.” She smiled at me, made me think she might actually make good on her eunuch threat. “Say hello, Emmersyn sweetie.”
Before I could, Lincoln’s voice changed. Immediately turned back to the voice I’d known and loved for so long, but this time, as he spoke, I felt nothing but regret. Three long years of it. “Emmersyn, hey. I’m sorry, I’m just upset, and I miss—”
“Save it.” My words came out sharp and strong. So much at odds with the turmoil racing through me. “I’ve heard enough and you can save your breath. I’m never coming back to you.”
“You bitch,” he seethed through the line, and that was when Heather had enough because she turned back.
“Steve, please escort Mr. Powers off the property. Call the cops if you have to. He’s one hundred percent never allowed back here. And Lincoln? Toodle-loo, motherfucker.” She pressed the red button. Ended the call and turned back to me. “You okay? I told you he was big mad.”
“I’m fine.” I wasn’t. My fingers were shaking and all the blood was rushing to my brain, making me dizzy.
“Did you just quote The Hangover?” Kane asked.
Heather grinned. “It’s the best. But seriously, that was intense.”
“I’m fine,” I said. “Really, or I will be, and I don’t know… hearing all of that helps? In a way? I had no idea…”
“None of us did.” Her smile fell. She glanced to Kane. “Take care of her?”
“Of course.”
“Do you need me?” she asked. “Because I can get out there, Emmersyn, if you need me. Graham will understand.”
“No. Stay there. I think I’m just going to drink the rest of the wine Kane has on hand and I’ll be good in no time.”
