“That’s my girl.” She fluffed her dark hair. “So, now that that’s out of the way, I have a date tonight. Wish me luck.” She winked.

I laughed.

This girl.

Kane might have thought she was crazy, but I loved it about her. She’d always been so much freer than me, so wild. So daring.

It didn’t surprise me one bit she could flip her switch that fast, and God love her for it. A valve released in my chest as we giggled, and I blew her a kiss with my fingers. “Be good.”

“Well that’s no fun! I’ll call you later, okay?”

“Of course.”

Her screen went dark and Kane stared at his phone for a beat before dropping it to his side. “I had no idea my sister was such a lunatic.”

“She’s the best.”

“Yeah.” He shook his head and chuckled. A low, rasp laugh that stopped just as quick as it made me smile. “How are you? She’s not wrong. That was intense.”

I was already on my way to the kitchen, grabbing the bottle of wine. I hadn’t lied about any of it. “I think I’ve decided something.” I poured my glass and took a healthy swig.

“What’s that?”

I turned to him, gathered up my courage into a nice little ball and tipped my glass in his direction. “I think you’re right. We should get married.”

My head was spinning. I’d taken worse hits into the boards than the dizziness brought on listening to my sister and that pencil dick trade threats and insults back and forth. So much so I was debating whether or not to book a flight, fly my ass out to Boston and let Lincoln know exactly what I thought of him and the way he talked to my sister.

How in the hell did Emmersyn appear so calm? She was trembling moments ago when I’d pressed my hand to her as soon as she heard Lincoln was there.

Now? She was smiling at me, vibrant green eyes as bright as the grass outside.

I was still seeing red.

Whore. Cunt. Bitch… that guy was a dead man next time I was in the Northeast.

“What?” I choked out the question. She couldn’t have just said what she did.

Not now. Not after that.

Her head tilted to the side, long, braided dark hair draped over her shoulder. “I’ve spent most of my adult life volunteering, and I’ve been waiting a long time in order to be able to get that money. To be able to do good things with it. To start organizations for kids who don’t grow up in circumstances I was fortunate to have.”

She said the last part quickly, almost like she was trying to reassure me she deserved it, but hell, that wasn’t even my call.

“So… Lincoln’s a dick, a complete and utter asshole, and now you think Heather’s idea is a good one.”

“Frankly, I’m pissed. And yeah. I mean, I’d love to be able to rip off his balls and throw them in a fire.”
