Yeah, but I didn’t hear him saying he wanted to stay together either.
Earlier confession aside, as I stared into his warm brown eyes, sunshine highlighting his face and making him more Roman god than normal, realization hit.
I’d done it.
I was officially the fool who fell in love with her temporary husband.
Twenty-Eight
Kane
I had no idea what to do to make Emmersyn feel better, so I stayed in the hot tub with her until the heat became more unbearable than comfortable, while she rested her cheek on my shoulder.
“I should go get us towels. And maybe order us some food?”
“That’d be nice.” She sounded half asleep. “Chinese would be great.”
“Then Chinese it is.” I groaned as I shoved to my feet and climbed out of the hot tub without bothering to throw anything on. I’d clean up our clothes later. “Stay here while I get the towels and order food. I’ll be back in a minute.”
She gave me a half-smile, exhaustion making her moves slow.
I hurried through the house to the laundry room where I kept spare towels, and grabbed a stack of them. I dried off quickly, wrapped the towel around my waist and was dragging another through my hair when my phone started to ring.
Probably the guys, wanting to meet up at Malley’s or something, but it was still ringing when I ran back to the kitchen. Except I didn’t account for the floor being wet from my trek through to get the towels, and I slid as I reached for my phone. It fell to the floor, clattered, and I grabbed hold of the counter before I landed on my ass.
Towels fell to the floor, and I finally grabbed the phone, and fumbled it before I answered.
“Hello?”
I hadn’t bothered to look at the ID.
A sniff came through the line that had me jumping to my feet.
“Hello?” I said again.
And then a voice, all too familiar, I didn’t have to wait for her to say anything before I recognized it came through the line.
Ava.
“You’re married,” she said, and if I wasn’t mistaken, her voice shook.
My body jolted in surprise, and my spine went straight. She was upset about this?
“Ava…” What else was there to say?
My wife, who I had just fucked so hard I saw stars, was still sitting in the hot tub, bare ass naked, waiting for me to grab her a towel. Shit.
“I’m… I didn’t expect that. I was surprised.”
I grabbed the towel from the floor that I’d lost in my near fall and wrapped it around my waist.
She and I both, really. But why was she calling?
“You wanted me happy.”
“I know. I did, but… I guess I thought that’d be with me.”
“What?” My head whipped toward Emmersyn, still sitting in the pool, but she was no longer relaxed or sleepy. Her arms had lowered, and I knew without standing by her, she’d wrapped them around her stomach.
