I huffed, finished my water, and refilled my stainless-steel bottle. “You’re full of shit. Heather thinks I’m awesome.”
“Yeah,” she said. “But she’s wrong a lot, too.”
Chuckling, I turned back to her. Color rose on her cheeks, and she quickly yanked her eyes up to meet mine.
From where they’d been on my ass.
She cleared her throat, sipped her wine while staring at my stove on the other side of the kitchen.
I gave her that play.
And then I turned away from her and readjusted my dick before she realized knowing she was checking me out was making me hard.
Shit.

“You’re joking.” Emmersyn gaped at me and then the card I was holding out in my hand. “I am not using that. And besides, Heather gave me hers, too.”
“Yeah, but then she sent me cash for you, too. Buy whatever you want. Tomorrow, or whenever we can work it out, we’ll go get you a phone, put you on my plan for as long as you need it.”
I was certain there was more to the story she shared earlier. But I’d had hours to think about what she had said while I got ready to go to practice.
I meant every word I said to her. She was safe here. And she’d stay that way for as long as she wanted.
Which was why I’d already placed a massive order she’d probably kill me for, and that was before I tried to give her the card she was still staring at.
“You’ve lost your mind.”
It was possible. I hadn’t been this twisted up over anything in years. Not even when we lost in the playoffs last season.
“What did I say about offering shit if I didn’t want to?”
“I am not going on a shopping spree and going on your phone plan, Kane. That’s insane.”
“Heather said you’d easily be able to pay her back for that money once she can get some cash out of your account for you. Until then, get what you need or want. You’ll pay me back. And for the phone, it’d be the easiest way, wouldn’t it?”
I was right. The way her lips pressed together and her nose scrunched proved she knew it, too.
My guess, she didn’t want to rely on another man after one she trusted hurt her so badly.
But fuck it.
I tossed the credit card to the counter next to the laptop I brought out earlier for her to use.
“I need to leave for practice. Might as well find something to do with your time. Order some clothes, Emmersyn. Anything to help make you feel normal. FaceTime Heather from the app on the computer. If she has your wallet, she can pull out cash and mail it. Lincoln will probably assume you’re there anyway, and you can pay me back then.”
“That’s a good idea,” she finally said and slid the card closer to the computer. “All right. Thank you.”
