It was only a few days since our fight, and now I had to leave for the airport in a couple of hours for an away game in Los Angeles.

“Good. Someone had a lot of energy last night. Wore me out.”

“Hell yeah, I did.” We’d been up late after getting home from my game at eleven. It was too bad I couldn’t wake her up that way today, too.

She grinned over the rim of her coffee mug, gently blowing on it to cool it down. “Do you have enough eggs for me?”

“Already on it.” I pointed to the smaller pan. I’d learned Emmersyn didn’t like vegetables, but she’d eat eggs, and the occasional cheese omelet. She only said no that first morning because she didn’t want to be a bother. I was working on putting a stop to that.

“Thank you. So…” She pulled a piece of paper toward her on the counter. Didn’t know why. We talked about my schedule all the time. “Los Angeles tomorrow, Buffalo on Thursday, and then New York on Friday. Do you often have games back to back like that? Two nights in a row.”

“Sometimes, and they suck, but usually only a few times a season and when the cities are that close.”

“Will you have time to go see Megan? Or maybe see if Glen is in his office?”

“I absolutely can make the time if you want me to, yeah.”

“I want to know what’s going on. Why Lincoln stopped bugging the hell out of me, and why Glen won’t sign over my trust. But if you don’t have the time, I get it. Megan said her PI was going to start looking for him this week, and I haven’t heard anything. But yeah, I don’t know. At least if one of us meets her face to face, it could keep her interested.”

“Then I’ll make the time.”

I could skip a team lunch on Thursday, grab something to go, and eat in the car and have plenty of time.

“Thanks, Kane.”

I slid her eggs in front of her and leaned across the counter. “Anything for you, Em.” I kissed her cheek and finished my omelet.

“What are you going to do while I’m gone?”

“I’ve been looking into getting back into volunteering. I’ve got a list of homeless shelters and women’s abuse shelters I want to look into, see what kind of help they need.”

“That’d be great.” Bonus for me, if she liked it enough, maybe she’d stay longer.

We hadn’t talked about the future since the other day. I couldn’t promise her the world or forever, not yet, but I knew one thing.

I was going to miss the fuck out of her when I had to say goodbye, whether it was for my away trips or forever.

Thirty minutes to game time. We’d beaten Los Angeles in the preseason, but that was then, and this was now. Both of us were having an excellent start to the season and were both undefeated. One of our teams would lose tonight, and one of us would go on to continue trying to break the record of the longest season-beginning winning streak.
