It was instinct that had my hand going to my crotch while choking. “Fuck, Emmersyn.”
“Too much?” She laughed and took a drink.
It took me a second. “Not even severe enough for what he deserves.”
“Then we’re on the same page.” She gulped audibly and her green eyes flared. “We’re getting married.”
Shit. A couple of nights ago, it’d seemed like a good idea. I helped her out. Kept her safe.
But after all of this, after a day to think about it, not to mention how my dick reacted happily to the sight of her or thought of her, now I was the one hesitating.
“Yeah,” I finally managed to mumble. “We should make some rules though.”
“Rules?”
“So there’s no confusion. I mean. A prenup, obviously. So you know I’m not after your money and everything.”
At that, she laughed. “I think you probably have enough you don’t need mine.”
“True.” God, I needed a drink. I’d have to slow down soon, but a man getting married again could drink, right? Fuck. My head hurt.
I rubbed my temples as I headed to pour a glass of bourbon and groaned.
“So a prenup. I’ve got lawyers who can draw that up.” Which reminded me of her finances. The fact she came with nothing.
“What about money, until then? Are you okay, or…”
“Lincoln and I have a joint checking account. My savings and my trust are all wrapped up and held by his father’s best friend, Glen Hayes, who’s also their family’s financial advisor. I didn’t want to touch anything or call Glen until I was somewhere Lincoln couldn’t come get me.”
Right. Because she didn’t want him finding her.
“How about this. Let’s change our tee-time for another day and tomorrow, before we go to Joey’s, we’ll swing by the bank and finally get you the phone I’ve been promising all week. I want you to be able to call Heather. Or… his mom?”
“Yeah. Maybe that’d be smart. As far as Irena, if I think about that part, my head will explode. I like her, don’t get me wrong, but who knows what Lincoln called her for or why she wants to talk to me. Hell, she might not know a damn thing and have questions about next week’s gala or our wedding.” She snorted and took another sip of her wine before she pushed it away. “Let’s get back to these rules.”
Right.
Our marriage rules.
“Sex,” I blurted out.
Red wine spewed all over my white marble counters. “Oh shit, I’m so sorry. It’s just… that’s not at all what I thought you were going to say.”
“Yeah, me either.” But I couldn’t help myself. I looked at her and I thought about it.
I touched her and for the first time in three years, I wanted it.
These rules were as necessary for me as for her.
“Um… well…” Her cheeks turned the stained color of my counter while she frantically grabbed paper towels and tried to mop up her mess. “I guess you’re right. There’s the consummation and everything.”
