I scrubbed my hand through my hair, down my face.

“Tell me about the trust Heather mentioned.”

Her face paled, and she bit her bottom lip. “It’s nothing. Stupid. I’ll figure something else out, but I can’t ask you to do this. Not when—”

“Ava.” Her name burned in my throat. “I know. I get it. Now tell me about the trust.”

Her cheeks puffed out, giving me a very vivid image of what… nope. Not fucking going there right now.

“I’m given a decent amount every month, mostly it was for school and basic living, but I stupidly put that all in a joint account with Lincoln once we moved in together. I can’t get access to the rest until I’m married. There are provisions for certain instances, like abuse, but fidelity? No… like I said, my grandfather was old-fashioned. And truthfully, I’m pretty sure my grandmother understood. She never minded, and I’m not entirely sure she was always faithful either based on some of her stories.”

Who was this girl? Engaged to a hospitality mogul’s son. Trust funds that sounded straight from the pre-American Revolution time period?

“Who were your grandparents?”

“Rocky Lorenz. My grandmother’s name was Colette… but everyone called her Coco. They were my mother’s parents.”

My brows furrowed. Oh… shit…

She saw when it clicked and nodded. “Yeah. Coco Rock Music Productions.”

“Holy fucking shit. They’re…”

“Were.” She flinched as she said it.

“Shit. I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay. It was five years ago. Airplane ride when I was twenty. Strangely enough, headed to their house on Martha’s Vineyard.”

“Why is that strange?”

She laughed then, almost bemused by my confusion. “Did it ever occur to you… or did Heather never say how she got her job?”

“No.” I shoved my hands through my hair and sighed. Holy fucking balls. Her grandparents were legends. They helped produce some of the most famous musicians. “That house…”

She nodded. “Their business partner’s son, Graham Rawlings, bought it. He’s running most of the business now. Good guy, but since they had a music studio in that house, and it was always a beloved place for him, he was given the option to buy it. He wanted it more than I did, so it was the one thing he received in their will.”

“And that money went to your trust.”

“Some of it. But yes, outside the funds needed for the business, all of their personal holdings and investments and other estates went to me, as the only heir they liked.”

Which meant she was loaded. Or would be.

As soon as she got married.

“Okay. Okay.” Shit. This was way more complicated than Heather’s original call of “hey, I got a friend headed your way and needs some help.”

I’d do anything for my sister. Take in her friend while she healed and figured out a plan and buy her golf clubs included. But this?

Yet…

I had no reason to believe she wasn’t being truthful. Which meant my desire to always be here for my sister might have just taken a drastic turn, because her idea wasn’t a horrible one… just a crazy one.
