Wasn’t sure I was willing to risk that conversation either.

“Great. I don’t know what to do with that.”

She smiled shakily. “That’s what I figured you’d say. That choice is yours though, you know?” A buzzing sounded in the background, like an old oven timer. She glanced right and frowned. “Hold on a sec. Security is buzzing me.”

She stood and hurried to her security panel. She could probably fly to Mars with as high tech as the security at her guest house was. And that didn’t compare to the main house’s either.

I’d spent so many summers at the house growing up and staying with my grandparents, back when I thought my life was perfect, I shouldn’t have still been blown away by the security they had. Of course, when Graham bought the house from me, he’d also added additional security.

She pressed a green button on the flat screen and instantly, the guard’s face was shining on it. “Hi Steve. How can I help you?”

The guard, with a graying mustache, hat tugged down low, glanced to the left and his blue eyes came back to the screen. “Hi Miss Andrews. I have a Mr. Lincoln Powers at the gate for you.”

“What?” I gasped.

Next to me, a hand settled at my back, startling me. I glanced up to find Kane, peering at the screen intently. If he realized he was touching me when our eyes met, he didn’t show it.

Heather turned to us and muttered, “Looks like you were right about that phone tracking thing.”

“Or he knows I’d run to you.”

“Shh.” She pressed her finger to her lips and turned back to the screen.

“Hi Steve. Can you please tell Mr. Powers to leave and if he ever tries to step foot on this property again, I’ll fill his ass with buckshot?”

“God, she’s psychotic,” Kane mumbled. “Since when do you have Dad’s shotgun?”

She winked at us and whispered with a smile. “He doesn’t know I don’t.”

I shook my head. “So much for not acting crazy.”

“Let me talk to her!” Lincoln’s voice screamed through the speakers and a bucket of cold water couldn’t have chilled me more. I couldn’t see him, but he must have been close to the guard’s station because his voice was loud and clear.

“It’s okay, Steve,” Heather said. “I wouldn’t mind hearing what Lincoln here has to say.”

“You sure?” he asked, and he took off his hat, revealing a shiny bald head before he swiped his forehead and settled it back on.

“I’m sure,” she called out louder. “Hi Lincoln. How can I help you?”

“Let me in, you fucking cunt. I know Emmersyn’s in there and she and I need to talk.”

Heather’s smile turned feral. “Well, hello pencil dick. I have no idea what you’re talking about. You and Emmersyn are having problems?”

“Fuck you. Where is she?”

Somehow, Heather’s voice took on a southern belle accent straight out of Gone with the Wind. “Well, I just don’t know what you’re talkin’ ‘bout, darlin’, but I suggest you turn that fancy car of yours around and head back to where you belong.”
