  39. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I didn’t need this situation to be any more complicated. Plus, soon I wouldn’t need them. The Tower of Sin would be capable of feeding my Greed.

The doors opened and I stomped out into my casino. It was deserted, which was an odd sight. The Tower of Sin didn’t close and it was always running at full capacity every hour of the day. I saw a few people still at slots as I walked through the place. It was eerily quiet.

I had to guess the shooting cleared the place out. I didn’t see the police or paramedics though. It had been a while so maybe they’d come and gone. If that was the case, where were all the people? A server was slouched against the bar, scanning the room in boredom.

“Do you know why it’s like this?” I asked her.

“No,” she said. “It’s weird though.”

“Did the police already come?” I asked.

“The police?” She asked in confusion as she combed back blonde flyaways. I narrowed my eyes. Shootings were a big deal on the Strip. They generally warranted a call to the police and a few fat stacks of bills shoved in pockets to make it all go away. I left the server and the main casino, trailing out to all the other places in Plutus—gift shops, restaurants, a nightclub. Even the buffet was empty. I stopped and tapped my foot.

Clearly, Remington had run everyone off. Where would the cowboy be? My eyes slid down the hall to the strip club. “Nude and Lewd” glowed in a pink neon sign above the entrance.

“Bingo,” I said, strutting forward. And how about that, my bet paid off. One Stetson-wearing cowboy sat inside, feet propped on the catwalk as a girl was on all fours, shacking her ass practically in his face. He looked unimpressed and vaguely disinterested while he shot rings of smoke at her. My eyes drifted to the arm Puca had ripped off. It looked nicely re-attached, although his clothes were drenched in gore. Guess he’d only had enough time to tend his wounds, not his outfit.

“This place needs a little more variety,” he said, picking up a glass of liquor and shaking it. The ice cubes smacked together before he pulled it up and took a thick swallow, draining the glass in one gulp. He set it down and then looked over his shoulder at me.

“Lacey Flanagan, how nice of you to join me,” he said with a self-satisfied smirk. I’d had enough random men delighted to know my name without me telling them lately.

“You got me put on the hit list,” I said, striding towards his spot in the club.

“Yeah, figured if I have to kill you too I might as well get glory and gold. Still don’t know what you are though. You be willing to tell me?” He asked as I slipped into the chair next to him, resting his gun on my thigh.

“No,” I said. The girl in front of us kept dancing and Remington rolled his eyes at her. “Not your type?” I asked.
