  123. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Her smile may have been small, but the way her shoulders relaxed wasn’t. “Now that that’s settled, I’ll go to the hospital alone—”

“No,” I said. “Not letting you out of my sight.”

“It won’t take long. My injuries aren’t even that bad. Definitely not the worst I’ve had.”

I kept my reaction locked down ’cause she didn’t need me flying off the handle.

“I just need to make sure Squish is okay. She’s moving around, but I’d never forgive myself if…” Her gaze moved to Ophelia. “Do you have ultrasound machines at any of the clinics you volunteer at?”

“We do,” O said, “but I can’t run the kind of labs you should get. And if you need a head scan… No, I can’t do it. I wouldn’t feel comfortable. But I can go with you to the hospital.”

Shit. I didn’t like the thought of not being there, but Mac and Squish’s safety came before me.

I was about to compromise that I’d wait in the car when an idea popped into my head. I looked at O. “What about your concierge contact?”

He’d handled my testing quickly without asking many questions. I got the feeling he worked with a lot of patients who required discretion and no paper trail.

She tilted her head. “I can ask, but it’ll likely cost you a shit-ton.”

I sat and pulled a swaying Mac onto my lap. “Doesn’t matter.”

“Okay, I’ll—”

“But not at my house,” I bit out, too fast and too harsh.

It limited the options since he also couldn’t come to the clubhouse till Glitch vetted him.

O pulled her cell from her back pocket. “I’ll see what I can do.”

Judge watched his wife go into the hallway and echoed my thoughts. “I’ll get Glitch to look into the doctor. Maybe we can work something out to have him on hand for the shit O can’t do.”

“Don’t let her hear you say there’s things she can’t do.” I wrapped my arms around Mac, keeping them loose but needing them there. Needing her in my arms. She leaned into me and rested her head on my shoulder.

“You know what I mean. It’d be good to have a doc and my nurse.”

“And a psychologist,” Mac put in, shocking the shit out of me. “I helped with that little girl, right?”

I pressed my lips to the top of her head. I wouldn’t hold her to anything she said right then, but it was another thing that meant more than she knew. “Couldn’t have done it without you.”

O returned. “He’s got time if we can get into the city soon.”
