‘Glad I caught you,’ Zac began. ‘I was hoping you’d be switched on during lunch. Are you still coming to the demo at the town hall tonight?’
‘I think,’ Georgia said, sure she’d caught a wary note in Zac’s voice.
‘Spanner in the works at my end,’ Zac continued. ‘One of my colleagues was in a motorbike accident.’
‘Really?’ Georgia gasped.
‘Nothing serious. But he’s in a neck brace, so I’m going to be on duty tonight.’
‘Oh,’ Georgia said. ‘I’ve got mounds of homework, so it’s probably for the best …’
‘No, no,’ Zac protested. ‘You should go.’
Georgia squirmed. ‘I won’t know anyone.’
‘I already gave Kamila a call,’ Zac said. ‘You remember her?’
‘The waitress at the Red Parrot,’ Georgia confirmed.
‘Kamila will be there with her boyfriend, Gerard, and loads of other SAG people. They’re meeting outside Red Parrot at ten past six. She says you’re very welcome and she’ll introduce you to everyone.’
Georgia didn’t fancy it but didn’t want to disappoint Zac either. ‘I got in trouble for staying out late Saturday. I’d be pushing my luck on a weeknight …’
‘I’ll text Kamila’s number,’ Zac said. ‘Let her know if you’re going or not.’
‘Right,’ Georgia said weakly. She wanted to see Zac for coffee or a walk in the park, not one of his political meets.
‘I’m on a fifteen-minute break and I need coffee,’ Zac said hurriedly. ‘I hope you get there tonight.’
‘Speak soon,’ Georgia agreed, and Zac hung up.
Maya grinned as she raised her head out of Rolf’s lap. ‘That your fancy man?’
Georgia tutted and smirked. ‘Maya, Jesus!’
Maya laughed. ‘You totally have a crush …’
‘Maybe,’ Georgia admitted. ‘But he’s twenty-seven, and my dead sister’s ex-boyfriend …’
‘That why you blew out Deano at the party?’ Rolf asked.
Maya and Georgia both scowled at him.
‘Why do you care?’ Maya asked Rolf sharply.
‘Dean’s seen me hanging around with Maya and you,’ Rolf explained. ‘He’s in my art class and he asked if Georgia was seeing anyone.’
‘What did you say?’ Georgia asked too eagerly, wincing as she realised she’d left an opening for Rolf to have a dig.
Rolf grinned. ‘I told him he’d be wasting his time, because you’re not his type.’
Georgia looked offended. ‘Why am I not his type?’
‘Dean’s a total player,’ Rolf said admiringly, then glanced warily, fearing Maya’s wrath. ‘I’m not being funny, but he’s a year-thirteen, and you’re … You’re innocent compared to someone like Maya.’
‘Hey!’ Maya said, giving Rolf a gentle slap on the knee. ‘I’m a slut now?’
