‘You are my only blood family in London,’ SJ said. ‘There is urgent business to attend to before the new governor is sworn in on Monday. I need you to take and sign documents at the West African Development Bank on the Strand. There are bank account numbers you must write down. Is pen and paper to hand?’

‘I’ll give you my email, or you can text them,’ Julius suggested.

‘No, no!’ SJ blurted. ‘There must be no electronic record of these accounts. Your first step is to access the safe. It is situated at the rear of the basement near the wine cellar.’

Julius smirked. ‘I think I saw that when I was younger, playing hide-and-seek.’

‘Good!’ SJ said. ‘I will now give you the safe access code.’

‘Pen poised, Uncle,’ Julius said, before taking down a code he knew by heart.

Julius was surprised when his uncle told him the location of a concealed keypad and a second code, to unlock an additional compartment in the safe floor. SJ told Julius that this part of the safe contained letters, with detailed instructions for moving money from bank accounts held by the Ondo State Government into a variety of accounts held by shell corporations in Switzerland, Costa Rica and the Isle of Man.

Julius thought about the criminal implications of what he was being asked to do as he filled four sides of A5 paper with names, account numbers, amounts and passcodes. He wondered what Remi could do with this information and worried that he still hadn’t heard from Duke.

‘Your contact at WADB is called Eddie,’ SJ said as he neared the end of the convoluted explanations. ‘His fee was agreed at twenty thousand pounds. There is cash in the safe to pay him. Take a couple of thousand and buy yourself something nice for your trouble.’

‘That’s very kind, Uncle.’

‘Call me on this number when the process is complete. No electronic messages! Not ever!’

‘I will,’ Julius agreed. ‘Is my mother with you at the mansion?’

‘She is in town, dealing with her legal situation,’ SJ said.

‘Legal?’

SJ coughed, then sounded irritated at having to explain. ‘Rotimi has promised to go after our family for corruption and says Adebisi money funded the transport park bombing. Under the Nigerian constitution, a state governor has immunity from any crimes committed while in office. So your mother is Governor Rotimi’s target and she is taking defensive steps. Meeting lawyers and such.’

Julius wasn’t his mum’s biggest fan, but that didn’t mean he wanted her thrown in jail. ‘The police are loyal to her though?’

SJ laughed. ‘Rotimi will put his men in all the big police jobs. The rank and file will follow because the state government pays their wages. I asked your mother to join you in London until the dust settles, but you know her way. Bunmi is never afraid to stand and fight …’
