Scott got up from the desk and paced. After a few seconds he shook his head. “Detectives, I think you already suspect the truth… that Gabrielle and I had a work-related romance. We did. Short-lived. It was a poor decision to get involved with an employee, especially one so much younger than myself, and I regret it. But it wasn’t something that would stop me from filing the missing person’s report. I do the right thing. You need to know that about me.”
“Care to elaborate on short-lived?” Warren asked.
Scott shook his head again, regretfully. “Our relationship came out of nowhere. Gabrielle kissed me one day and I kissed her back. One thing led to another and we were in bed before I knew it. The sex was hot. She was hot. We dated secretly for a few weeks. But there was really nothing more between us to keep the relationship going. I think we both knew it was over when it finally ended.”
“Did she take the break-up well?” Warren asked.
“Very well.” Scott gave a laugh. “I don’t think she had any sleepless nights after I was gone.”
“Was she ever vindictive?” Gavin asked.
“Vindictive? No. I didn’t see her socially anymore and when it came to our work environment, Gabrielle and I always maintained a professional demeanor during, and after. Hell, no one even suspected anything was going on between us here.”
So, Perry Logan describes Gabrielle as vindictive but Scott Payne does not, thought Gavin. “Thank you, Mr. Payne. Anything more you care to add?”
“I can’t think of anything.” The caution in Scott’s voice was evident.
“How was Gabrielle dealing with her cancer?” Gavin purposely asked this out of nowhere to get Scott’s honest reaction.
“What?” Scott’s eyes went wide and he looked from Gavin to Warren, searching for an answer. “Cancer? Did I hear you right? Gabrielle had cancer?”
“She didn’t say anything to you about it?” Gavin remained calm.
Scott’s reaction was of true shock. He didn’t know. “No, not a word.” Scott walked over to his desk chair and sank down into it. “My God, poor Gabrielle.”
Gavin looked at Warren, who shook his head, signaling neither had anything more to ask Scott at this time. “If you can think of anything, can you give me a call?” Gavin rose and held out a card with his number on it.
Scott took the card. “Of course.”
Once they were in the hallway Gavin’s phone vibrated. He pulled it out and took a quick look at the screen. It was the crime lab. They had found something odd with regard to Gabrielle Morgan’s body. Specifically, her hair.
