Val absorbed the question. It did make sense. Maybe Gabrielle wanted to come into her parents’ lives long enough to give them hope and then snatch it away. If she saw Mr. Morgan as winning, that she had to give in to him, she trumped him.
“That’s totally possible,” Mr. Morgan said without any hesitation, then glanced at his watch. “I’m sorry to have to cut this short but Rachel and I have to be at a fundraiser in less than an hour.”
Mrs. Morgan did not protest when Val, Gavin and Warren rose. They all shook hands and Gavin thanked the couple for their time. “If we need to talk again, would that be possible?” Gavin asked Mr. Morgan.
“Of course, detective. Rachel and I will work with you on whatever you need. Touch base with Claudia and she’ll set up an appointment.” For some reason it seemed less than sincere and Val couldn’t help but think that this was the one and only time Mr. Morgan was going to discuss his daughter under Detective Gavin’s terms. Any other correspondence would be under Mr. Morgan’s conditions.

Val’s thoughts were still spinning after meeting with the Morgans. Gabrielle’s life was far more complicated than Val could have imagined and each piece picked apart, exposed another. Gabrielle’s own parents—well her father at least—practically confirmed she was capable of carrying out a murder and suicide.
The tree branches. The seeds. Hopefully, Val would find out what they were today. Possibly also, what meaning they might have had for Gabrielle. Or this case in general.
Val had an easy time finding an arborist. The Buffalo Botanical Gardens had two on staff. Excellent internet hit. After she called and made an appointment to meet with a Dr. Cal Delarosa, she asked Jack if he wanted to tag along for the visit. Plus, lunch at Schwabl’s, a hometown favorite for roast beef sandwiches, was planned for after. No need to twist his arm.
Val hadn’t been to the botanical gardens since she was a child on a school field trip. It was a shame she didn’t visit more often. When you know you can experience a local marvel at any moment, how often do you ever grab the opportunity? Val had to laugh, though she lived only twelve miles from Niagara Falls, one of the wonders of the world, she couldn’t remember the last time she visited that either, other than to work on the murder case last spring. Maybe crime was helping her become reacquainted with Buffalo’s treasures.
