Chapters (49)
I overheard Mother saying Valentina Knight worked with the police. This was after the day Val came to see me, in my room. When Mother brought Val here, Mother used the key Val had in her pocket to lock her upstairs. She wondered how Val had it. She thought Val stole it the day she came to our house. I brought the key back to Val. So she could escape. But Mother found out that I had gotten out of my room. I wasn’t able to avoid my pills on that day.
Val told me she tried to get me to leave with her after she got out of the attic. I have no memory of that. That’s what strong drugs will do. If things didn’t work out with Val, I’d be worse than dead.
“Ma’am, Melinda Holbright is here,” my new housekeeper called from the bedroom doorway.
I walked out of the bathroom and smiled at her. “Thank you. Just let Ms. Holbright know I’ll be right down.”
Melinda killed my brother-in law. She drowned my brother and sister. She would have drowned me that day too if Bethany hadn’t screamed. She’s here today, thinking she’s going to win. She’s wrong.
You know my story. I’ve confessed my sins. You can judge me as you see fit. I understand that. But what I hope is that you can let me live in peace. Finally. Now I do have to go. I’m about to have Gabrielle’s old friend for tea.

My deepest gratitude to Bloodhound books for having faith in The Secrets We Bury and agreeing to take it on! Thank you to Betsy Reavley and Fred Freeman, Heather Fitt- for your amazing insight on the initial draft, Tara Lyons, Clare Law – editor extraordinaire, and the rest of the editorial, design and publicity team. You are awesome. I can’t thank you all enough at Bloodhound for bringing The Secrets We Bury out in the world and helping me make it the best it can be.
Thank you to all who answered my questions, gave me information and advice on poisons. I tried to keep the details as accurate and real (and as safe!) as possible. Also, thank you to those who’ve helped me with my forensic and crime scene investigation questions. Any errors, or stretches of the imagination, are my own.
To my friends, colleagues, co-workers, former and current students at UB, the encouragement you’ve given is amazing. Thank you all!
To my dear friend Dr. Ray Miller, I can’t thank you enough for your support, advice, and letting me bend your ear during our Friday PM chats. We’ve walked a long road together, and I look forward many more miles. Yes, I know, still no dog in this book – but there’s always the next.
