“I also told you that I found a key…”
“Yes…”
“I kept the key.”
“Jesus Christ, Val! Don’t tell me…” Gavin shot up from his desk chair. “Did Jack Styles have something to do with this? Because the Valentina Knight I know doesn’t do shit like this.”
Val just nodded. She couldn’t speak.
“Shit! Shit! Shit! How many times have I spoken to you about hanging out with him? You have a job to do and he exploits that job. You are not some celebrity crime show persona, like he is. Christ, I know how easy it can be to be swept up in something like this. But you have protocol to follow. He does not. You screw up and guilty people go free. You screw up and the guilty people he typically defends get to go free. He wins. You lose.”
Val cringed and sunk back in her seat. “I’m sorry, I told you I forgot about it until now.” She knew she’d feel guilty and stupid if she used this excuse about this and boy was it coming on hard.
Gavin exhaled and placed his hands on his hips. “I’ll let this go. Mr. Morgan thinks it’s lost. This gives me a little more time to get a search warrant and get to the contents before he does.”
Val narrowed her eyes, trying to follow where Gavin was going with this.
“Safe deposit boxes need two keys to open them. A personal key and the guard key. The bank keeps the guard key. Neither key can open the lock alone. If the personal key is lost the bank will have to arrange for a locksmith to drill the lock. There’s a whole process Mr. Morgan will need to go through with the bank before they’ll drill the lock for him, and that takes time, longer than me getting a warrant, which I’m hoping for by tomorrow morning at the latest.”
Val still held her gaze on Gavin, scrutinizing.
“Depending what’s in that box, Mr. Morgan can bury any scandalous evidence like he’s done in the past. I guarantee, if there is anything that’s unfavorable for him in that box, it will be lost. Mr. Morgan might not be protecting Gabrielle anymore, but he certainly is protecting his business.”
“Do you need the key, then?” Val eased a little.
“Val, this is one time that I am pretty happy that you did something that you weren’t supposed to do. I need to open the safe deposit box before Mr. Morgan. So, Val, what I’m saying is yes, I’m happy he doesn’t have the key and you do.”

Gavin, Warren and Val stood in the bank vault waiting for the bank manager to return with the other one of the two keys that would open Gabrielle’s safe deposit box. The search warrant arrived in Gavin’s hands just one hour ago.
