Mrs. Morgan took a deep breath before she continued. “Gabrielle had problems with Melinda in the past. I hadn’t spoken to my daughter in some time when she contacted James and myself, wanting to reconcile. It wasn’t like Gabi to cave in first. James was right when he said she’d hold out until we flinched. Something made her contact us. I think she was afraid of something. Or someone?”
Melinda is trying to blame Bridget for the day the twins drowned. Bethany is warning Mrs. Morgan about it. Melinda tried to screw Mr. Morgan, but Bethany may be actually doing it. Bethany is in Gabrielle’s condo. These girls have been competing with each other for years. And they all know what happened the day the twins died. One is now dead. So is her son.
There’s no statute of limitations for murder in New York. Though the girls were sixteen at the time they could still be charged. The questions tumbled in Val’s mind, almost tripping over each other. One other person knows what happened in the house that day.
“Would it be possible to see Bridget today? I’d really like to meet her, especially after eating this beautifully decorated cake.” Val expected Mrs. Morgan to say no, but she had to try.
“Of course, Val, if you want to see Bridget I’ll introduce you. She doesn’t do well with crowds of any size but I don’t think you alone will be upsetting to her.” Mrs. Morgan stood. “Come now, I’ll introduce you to her.”

Val followed Mrs. Morgan out of the kitchen through the main hallway and up the massive front staircase. Val turned to the left and right so the camera in her wire would get a good view. Gavin was right, it was easy after some time to forget it was there.
An easy five feet across, the stairs curved gently upwards. At the top of the landing they turned right. Val and Mrs. Morgan traveled down the corridor.
Val turned her neck, looking in all directions. “This house has a third floor. Where are the rest of the stairs?”
“It has four floors, if you count the attic. The top floors were for the servants, back in the days servants used to live in the house they used a different staircase. It continues behind the door to your left over there.” Mrs. Morgan pointed.
Val remembered what Bethany had said about the servants’ stairs. This must be how Melinda snuck in to try to have a romp with Mr. Morgan, but why? Money? Was she trying to screw Mr. Morgan or screw over Gabrielle? Or Bethany?
