“They’ve been very open-minded so far and I can’t criticize the Morgans for their support in this case. They understood the importance of not jumping to conclusions. And they wanted to rule out this long shot, to be of help to us. Gavin’s report of his interview with Perry confirmed what they suspected of their daughter, her mental state, and the Morgans want this completed now. And I can’t emphasize enough the NOW. They’ve protected Gabrielle her whole life and they realize they can’t do it anymore.”
Val sat back in her chair. She was shocked, Mrs. Morgan wanted to know who was responsible for this. If she was caving in it was because her husband was making her. “Dr. Maddox, I don’t think it’s this easy. I don’t want to hurt the Morgans by dragging this out, but it’s possible someone killed their daughter and grandson.”
Dr. Maddox took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes. “Val, that’s why I’m going to let you follow through with some of the leads you have. There are things that don’t make sense, as you’ve said. I think at the end of the day we’ll all sleep better if we know that we covered all our bases. I’ll give you one week and then this assignment is over. My ruling on manner of death will be final.”
Val was thrilled that Dr. Maddox gave her this latitude, but a week? How was she going to finish this in a week? She stood up to leave, but Dr. Maddox put his hand up in the air, signaling wait a minute. “Gabrielle was a troubled young woman, don’t forget that. I’m letting you explore, but don’t go crazy. The Morgans are not a family that you want to mess with. They’ve said to stop and this is defying that wish. If you open the wounds, give them false hope that Gabrielle may be innocent, you’ll turn them into your worst enemies and I won’t be able to save you. No one can. This is the same for your job and mine. Val, screwing up on a big case is a career-ending move.”
These words chilled Val. She stood on her own. Though Dr. Maddox said her job and his, she was convinced that if push came to shove, she’d be sacrificed, especially if Dr. Maddox needed to save his own ass. “Don’t worry. I have no intention of screwing up.”

Munchausen’s? Val was skeptical. But it was a burning question and the best person to answer that was Gabrielle’s doctor, the one who thought she had this disorder. After several phone calls and no response from the doctor, Val decided she needed to be more persuasive.
