Gabrielle was also trying to get custody of her sister, Bridget. Was she was trying to get her out of that house?
Or protect her from someone else?
Because Bridget is another witness to what happened the day the twins drowned.

Val’s thoughts circled to the Morgan twins. Something more happened that day. It had to have. The last piece of the puzzle that connects this case is missing. The only two people still alive from that day are Melinda and Bridget. Who is Bridget in danger from?
Val pulled out her phone and called Gavin for the third time and for the third time it went to voicemail. With everything that she’d learned so far, for some reason Val couldn’t get the shampoo bottle in Bethany’s guest bathroom out of her head. Bethany had lived in a condo that Gabrielle had lived in. And Mr. Morgan owned it.
But more than the shampoo bottle, Val thought about the key she found in Gabrielle’s pocket. The elevator at the condo used a key. Dammit, this thing has to belong to something. Was this it? Val texted:
Mitch, I’m going to Bethany’s condo. Meet me there.
After trying the key, if it worked, she’d wait for Gavin to show up and they could check out the condo together. Val definitely wanted another look inside.
Once Val arrived in the parking lot she got out of her car and hurried to the front door, searching on her phone, she looked up the police report from the night she collected Bethany’s body. Val quickly found what she was looking for: the code for the front door. She punched in the numbers and entered the building.
With the key in her hand, she moved towards the elevator. As soon as she arrived at the entrance, she tried to slip it in the lock, but it wouldn’t go. She tried again. And then a third time. Son of a bitch! It didn’t fit. Val pulled it out, repositioned, and tried again. There was no way this key was going into that hole. Then she had another thought, the maintenance entrance… that also uses a key. And a code.
Val had no code, but she didn’t care. At this point, she only needed to see if the damn key fit. Val trudged outside, around to the side of the building and stepped through a couple of feet of snow to get to the entrance. By this time, her leg was well on its way to becoming numb and she had a hard time walking through the drifts. She struggled to get to the door, managing to get close enough to try the key.
Again, the key only went part way in. Dammit! Val twisted and then gave up: she didn’t want to break the key. This doesn’t fit here either.
