Warren pulled out his phone and began checking his messages. “An iWatch is not like having a Rolex, Mitch. Get with the times. The guy works at Best Buy. Could have gotten an employee discount on one.”

Gavin smirked, and let out a deep breath, which immediately became visible in the frigid air. “Jesus, what’s the temperature out here?” He was so pumped he didn’t feel the cold.

“Has to be less than ten degrees.”

Gavin’s phone vibrated and he pulled it out of his pocket to see who was calling. It was the Erie County Crime Lab. Gavin quickly answered. The DNA results on the tape wrapped around Gabrielle Morgan’s hands and that on her mouth were completed. The knife too.

After a couple of minutes he said, “Any holy water in the church?” Causing Warren to raise his eyebrows. Gavin listened for a few more minutes before hanging up.

“Where does holy water come into all of this?” Warren asked.

“Before I explain, first let me say only Gabrielle’s DNA is on the tape. Only her fingerprints are on the inside of it, along with more of her DNA. Her fingerprints and DNA are all over the knife too.”

“And we thought all along her DNA would be all over the knife, either planted or real. But she taped herself. This means she killed herself and her son. The case is shut, Mitch.”

“Maybe not.”

“Care to explain?”

“A small amount of cornstarch powder was also found on the inside of the tape. The same type of powder used inside latex gloves.”

There was a few seconds of silence. Gavin knew Warren sensed the significance, but his face told Gavin that he wasn’t convinced.

“You want to hang everything we know about this case so far on that? It’s pretty weak and could have come from anywhere.” Warren sighed and looked up at the sky, like he was contemplating, thinking. “Mitch, the only way that could have happened is if the killer wore gloves and then for some reason, changed them. Or wore two sets of gloves, and removed one. It’s the only way the powder from the inside of one set would have transferred to the outside of a new pair. The only way powder would have been on the outside of the gloves and transferred to the tape.”

“Exactly. Manufacturers only put powder on the inside. And…” Gavin hesitated on the and. “If someone changed his or her gloves, there’s no way he or she could have washed their hands in that church. There’s no bathroom. It’s a Protestant church so they don’t put holy water out in little receptacles like the Catholics do.”

“That’s why you asked about holy water,” Warren said.

“Yes. Even if someone wiped their hands on a cloth it wouldn’t have eliminated all of the powder.”
