“That wouldn’t have been a typical vindictive move from the Gabi I knew. When Gabi was getting revenge, she wanted you to know she was the one doing it. She wanted to see the results of her plan. There’d be no thrill for her if she was dead, because there’d be no way to see you suffer.” Perry checked his watch, which Gavin noted was an iWatch. “I’m sorry, detectives, but I have to end this meeting. I need to be at work soon.”

The three men rose. As Perry walked them to the door Gavin asked, “Did you talk to Gabrielle after the divorce? Did you maintain any contact with her, or Adam?”

“No. I just told you she was vindictive. When I left, I became her enemy,” Perry said. “She made sure she saw me suffer.”

“By doing what?” Gavin narrowed his eyes.

“She started small by trashing my band online. Then she went further. I think she contacted some big vendors in the city. I lost a huge gig playing at Canalside last Labor Day. It was a daylong event of free concerts and my band was one of twenty that was supposed to play. We won the spot in a contest and when they uninvited us, that was a big loss. Thousands of people attend the event. Though we weren’t making any money for playing, the exposure would have been tremendous.” Perry checked his iWatch again. “I really do have to go.”

Gavin placed his hand on the door handle, and then stopped. “One more thing. I’ll make it quick. Gabrielle had a brother and sister, twins who drowned when she herself was a teenager. Gabrielle was supposed to have been watching them.”

“Gabi only talked to me once about that. All she said was, ‘I wish I could have done something more, but it wasn’t possible.’ She didn’t elaborate on what ‘more’ was and I didn’t press her.” Perry looked at his iWatch, getting impatient. It was obvious he wanted to wrap this up. “It didn’t come up again.”

When they were back outside Warren asked, “What do you think?”

“I think he didn’t ask his ex-wife enough personal questions to get to know her before, and after, he married her.”

“Maybe he didn’t care about anything other than the money.”

“I agree. And it seems like he ended up with a rich, spoiled, vindictive woman who controlled the household. Locking her son up was either a meltdown for Gabrielle or a pattern of abuse, or a psychotic episode.” Gavin tightened his scarf and shoved his hands into his pockets. “Also, I think that man’s not stupid, he knows what to say to us… and dammit, Alex, I think he has a watch that’s too expensive for him.”
