What a sophisticated answer from Perry, Gavin thought. He said plainly, “Then please explain for me in your own words what you experienced.”
“The highs and lows became evident and then glaringly obvious. Some days, she’d be so depressed she wouldn’t speak and then without warning she’d have so much energy that she wouldn’t sleep. I think mental issues ran in the family. Her sister Bridget was the real nut job though.”
Jesus. Gavin felt blindsided again. He remembered the Morgans speaking about this sister. The one that Gavin was not allowed to speak with. “The Morgans said that she had developmental disabilities.”
“She’s a loon and they keep her locked away so that no one can see it. Gabi could at least function in front of people. Fool them.” Perry laughed. “She fooled me.”
“You’ve met her, Bridget?” Gavin watched Perry hard, waiting for the answer.
“Once. I remember she was shaky and nervous, very confused overall. I saw her on the only day I ever stepped foot in the Morgans’ house. Gabi brought her down from her room to meet me. Mrs. Morgan heard the commotion. She appeared a few minutes later and yelled at Gabi. She had the maid take Bridget away and then told me to get out of her house,” Perry said. “If you ask me, the whole family was messed up.”
“So, they disliked you before they even met you?” Gavin asked.
“I wasn’t some blueblood chosen for their daughter. I didn’t need to do anything other than not be that.”
“Was her first husband chosen for her?” asked Warren.
“I have no idea. Gabi never spoke about him and I didn’t want to know. I just assumed that’s how it goes with those who are stinking rich.”
“Gabi defied her parents’ orders and married you anyway. After they cut her off, she carried a grudge against them, didn’t she? She refused to have contact with them and kept Adam away from his grandparents,” Gavin said.
Perry scoffed. “The Morgans were trying to get custody of Adam. That’s why she was staying away from them.”
Gavin opened his eyes wide, glancing for a split second over at Warren, then shifted his gaze back to Perry. “Was this in retaliation for the two of you getting married?”
“No, by this point they’d been trying to get Adam for a while, well before I met Gabi. I think our marriage put the pressure on and gave them the ammunition that was needed. They really upped the game, calling her unfit. Several social workers came to the house but found nothing wrong with her parenting abilities. I guess money can’t buy ripping a child away from his mother.”
