Or he could dance his way around these trees, hoping one or both of the Scabs would collide with a branch and be knocked silly so that he could then dismount and behead them before they woke.
An even more absurd proposition.
Fighting was out of the question, he decided. He wasn’t here to kill Scabs. He was here to retrieve the catalina cacti with the others, return to the village, and then explain to Thomas Hunter that he’d made a dreadful mistake. When Johnis had said “I will” in the stadium, he’d really meant “I won’t,” but the beauty of Thomas’s wife, Rachelle, had messed with his thinking.
Johnis ducked his way around trees and caught sight of the two black wraiths hounding him like shadows. They rode in silence, but their horses pounded and snorted. He could practically feel the hot air from their nostrils blasting against his neck.
Forest Guard horses were said to be faster than the Horde’s, but the tight trees took away this advantage. They were actually gaining!
Johnis veered to his right, cutting back toward the clearing. He had to get back into the open to give his horse a chance. And if he couldn’t break away, he would draw his sword and try to kill at least one before they chopped him.
But there was a chance that his very first instinct would prove right. In which case he wouldn’t run or turn and fight. He would lead these two beasts into a trap.
He galloped free of the trees several hundred yards down from where he’d first entered them. To his far right, three horses stood where there should have been five.
Two had fled. The two desert horses were gone.
Billos, Darsal, and Silvie sat on their stamping mounts, swords still drawn.
Johnis jerked his horse right and thundered toward them. Behind him the two dense thugs followed. Hope swelled in his chest.
He was fewer than fifty yards from the other three when one of the horses in pursuit whinnied. He glanced back and saw that the Scabs had smelled the trap and were reining back.
“Go!” Johnis yelled. “Go, go!”
Billos, Darsal, and Silvie went. They flew past Johnis, headed straight toward the two stunned Scabs behind him, who by now had surely seen their fallen comrades in heaps on the grass, dead.
Johnis turned his mount and kneed him forward. But the three new Forest Guard fighters didn’t appear to need his help. Darsal and Billos split wide left and right, forcing the two Scabs to cover their flanks while Silvie drove straight up the middle toward them.
Johnis watched in fascination as the battle unfolded like a choreographed dance. Even though the three recruits had been in training only two weeks, they worked together flawlessly.
