“Does he resemble our rogue agent just a little bit?” Juan had changed his face to be able to come back for another try at Emma, but she’d dismissed the possibility when it came to Anthony Curtis. No one took their job seriously enough to have plastic surgery. In the back of her mind she’d always thought his dealings with Juan, and ultimately Gracelia, were a part of his undercover work for Annabel. No agent would permanently erase his identity like this unless he’d left that life behind. “Remember what Vincent told us?”
“Anthony’s father had tried for years to get on Vincent’s payroll. It was one of the reasons he’d been released from the FBI,” Emma said, cocking her head as she stared at the picture. “His son does look a lot like him.”
“Jerome Rhodes is Anthony Curtis, and he’s taken over what Gracelia had and expanded on it. It’s like he fulfilled what his father failed at, only he’s the boss this time. He’s not taking orders from someone like Bracato.”
“We should’ve thought of that when you figured Juan out,” Emma said.
“I was certain he was working undercover, but I was wrong.” She shrugged when Emma laughed. “Come on, it happens.”
“You’re saying Anthony pulled a Juan and changed his face surgically?” Remi asked, and she nodded. “Wow, that’s messed up.”
“Not really when you think of what his father wanted. Easy money and plenty of it was what he was after when he offered to work for Vincent.” She tapped the picture and thought about the meeting that night. “This changes things.”
“What things?” Emma asked.
“We should give the feds the opportunity to close their case,” she said as she stood. “Lou,” she called out the door. “Is Colin still here?”
“He’s working in the sunroom.”
Remi followed her out of the room, but Emma and Dallas stayed behind. “Colin, call Rhodes and see if he answers. You need to change the meeting for tonight.”
“Why?” Colin asked, but he didn’t sound like he was disagreeing.
“Because neither of those guys is leaving alive, but I don’t want them to disappear. There’s no way to move bodies out of Vincent’s without someone noticing.”
“That’s new,” Colin said, smiling. “Are we hanging them from the gates or something?”
“No, I have something completely different in mind.”
They listened in as Colin told Jerome about his change of plans and asked if he could meet in his hotel suite instead. Getting them out of the Hilton Riverside was going to be a lot easier than Vincent’s basement. Jerome didn’t hesitate to agree and said he’d be there in a few hours.
