“We had a recent talk about Abigail Eaton and her daughters. Cain told me how important they are to her, and if something strange happened, or someone came by trying to remove them, to make her the second call after the police.”

The clip of Levi’s words made her want to sit down. It couldn’t be horrible news, though—Abigail and her kids were with them. “They’re good friends,” Emma said, “and Cain was worried about them after what happened to them in New York a few months back.” She pinched her forehead and wanted to rush Levi, but she needed the whole story and for him to understand how much Cain meant what she’d said. “I’m not sure if Cain told you, but someone tried to kill Abigail and take her kids.”

“Believe me, Emma, we learned our lesson with Hannah. It’ll take an act of God to get a child out of here, but I understood where Cain was coming from.”

“Good,” she said, moving the phone so Dallas could listen in. “What does that have to do with why you’re calling?”

“There was a trigger of our alarm system a few days ago,” Levi said, and she and Dallas looked at each other. “The police came out and walked the perimeter of the building. There were no broken windows and no apparent forced entry, so they figured it was a false alarm, and the security company reset the alarm.”

“But you don’t think that?”

Levi hesitated, but he started talking when she cleared her throat. “I was out for a few days visiting my brother and got the message when I got back. You guys were the main contributors to the alarm system, and it’s sophisticated enough that I doubted it triggered accidentally. Today I walked every inch of the school and found something that Cain needs to know about.”

“Tell me, Levi,” she said ready for the end.

“It wasn’t anything like vandalism, but in Sadie Eaton’s classroom someone crumpled some of her work and threw it on the ground. That made me call Victoria’s teacher, and we went through her work. The picture she did of her family is missing from her room’s bulletin board, and it’s the only one that’s missing.” Levi stopped and took an audible breath. “I checked their files in the office, and they’re missing too. That had all their information on it.”

“Abigail put their home address on that paperwork?” If she had, they should’ve reconsidered that.

“Just a PO box, but Finley Abbott’s contact information was on it too. And the name change in progress for the kids. If this puts them in any danger, please tell Cain to watch out for them. I emailed the video footage we got. The police have it as well.”
