“No need for that, boss. Me and the boys did what you asked, but it wasn’t fun to shoot up the places we like to hang out. Felt wrong.” Dino reminded her of the first time she met Lou. Her longtime guard was a big quiet man who hadn’t really said much until they’d gotten to know each other well. This was the first time she’d ever heard Dino string this many words together at once.
“They’re coming back, and once they’re open, the drinks are on me for you and your boys.” She and Lou left out the back and drove to the hospital. If there was anyone still watching Josh, she didn’t spot them, and Josh sat up straighter when he saw her. The move appeared to cause a lot of pain, so she walked to him quickly and took his hand. “Relax, old friend.”
“Cain, I’m so sorry about what happened,” Josh said, sounding pained but not from his wounds.
“Forget about all that and tell me what the hell happened.” She knew all about the first shooting, but that was something she wasn’t going to share, even with Josh. It was the second round she was interested in.
“I met with one of the guys you had on your list, that guy that did the house, remember?”
“Jimmy Pitre is hard to forget, and I’m sure that’s what he says about me too,” she said, laughing. It was probably a given that his asshole puckered every time he saw her or heard her name.
The macho guy had tried to intimidate Emma until he’d met with Cain, and she’d given him a lesson in intimidation. While she’d been recovering from Big Gino’s attempt on her life, Jimmy had allowed a bunch of FBI agents to blend in with his crew. The agents had taken advantage of the open walls and planted enough listening devices that they could have heard her thoughts. It’d been the bugs in her and Emma’s bedroom that made her think of the worst punishment she could fathom to hit Jimmy with. She’d made him shove thirty of the things up his ass and swallow the rest. There was no chance that Jimmy Pitre was ever going to forget her in this lifetime.
“He said he’d done some work for you and promised the same deal as before. We met for him to get a sense of what we wanted, and he brought one of his crew with him to help measure. They’d finished all the stuff I told him about, and the guy said he wanted some measurements of the old bar so they could replicate it in the front section.”
