“I’ll take care of all that, boss. Get some sleep. If you want to head back earlier, I’ll change our tickets.” Lou put his empty glass down and stood.
“We have some guests coming tomorrow, so don’t change anything.” Cain mentally scanned the puzzle pieces, trying to work out which one to pick up next. “I need to talk to Judice to see what she’s worried about. You know Colin as well as anyone, so it could be about anything. And the last thing we need is Colin and one of his great new ideas that becomes my problem.” She waited until Lou had gone back to his room before waking Mano up. He promised he’d have someone posted on Josh twenty-four hours a day. “Make sure you do the same, Mano. I want to make sure your family is careful as well.”
“If everyone thinks someone shot up all our properties the other night, why would someone else do the same thing? I still don’t understand that,” Emma said, dropping her robe and getting back in bed.
“Sometimes it takes a little while for the whole picture to come into focus, but I doubt this is Nicola Antakov.” She got in next to Emma and put her arms around her when Emma came closer.
“Why?”
It probably wasn’t wise to overshare her thoughts about something like this, but she’d promised no more secrets between them from the day they’d gotten back together. “The day Antakov hits, it’ll be with what she’ll consider a kill shot. That’s who her family is, and I don’t see her changing her way of doing business. Why send a warning shot when a kill shot eliminates the problem?”
“Why do you think she holds you responsible for her parents’ deaths?” Emma asked even though they’d talked about this before. “I know they had to have had more enemies than just us.”
“I was the last person to see them alive. They’d come for a very specific request, and I was in a position not only to help them, but to understand what they were asking me. Our lives are vastly different when it comes to business, but they had the same devotion to family I do. The only major difference was that I’m not going to raise my kids to be pimps. For them, though, it’s all they’ve ever known. Exploiting trapped women was something they’d become immune to.”
“There’s no honor in what they did, and I’m not sorry you gave Finley the opportunity to remove that threat from Abigail and her children’s lives.”
“The problem is that I opened them up to another greater threat, so we’ll have to see this through no matter what.” They were quiet for a moment, lost in their own thoughts.
