“Who the hell did that?” Emma asked, her hand pressing down harder.
“We both know who did it the first time, but someone took the opportunity to add on. Shooting up my own places was supposed to make me look weak, but it wasn’t an invitation to do it again.” She took Emma’s hand and led her under the shower stream. “My redecorating technique was meant to be the beginning of laying a trap, and this proves it worked too well. Whoever did it, though, is going to pay for what happened to Josh.”
“Do you want to head home?” Emma asked.
She didn’t move as Emma ran her soapy hands down her chest. “I’m going to have to trust Sanders to keep everything under control until we’re ready to come home. I’d rather not cut our vacation short, but I’m going to send some of the guys back to keep the peace and protect our territory. Nothing is going to happen at the farm, and even if it does, we’ll see them coming and we’ll be ready.”
“Is Josh seeing anyone? I feel bad that I haven’t really talked to him lately. If it wasn’t for him, I would have never met you.” Emma’s eyes became glassy with tears, and Cain held her.
“Josh has never been open about his private life, and I’ve never pushed it.” She got them out of the shower and threw on a robe. Lou knocked a few minutes later, dressed pretty much the same way.
“You want to go back?” Lou asked.
“Not yet. I need you to call the other families and tell them to tighten security. I don’t want anyone to get caught by surprise if this is only the beginning.” She took a couple of small bottles of whiskey out of the minibar and poured drinks for Lou and Emma before pouring one for herself. “Call Katlin next, and tell her to pick half of the guys we have at the farm and send them home. The next asshole that takes a shot at any one of our people better be dead on the street, so make sure she gets that across to every single person going back. This doesn’t happen without someone paying a price.” She had to gain the upper hand again before Emma or the kids became the next target. Losing any of them would kill her will to live.
“What about Josh?” Lou asked.
“I’ll get in touch with Mano and see if they can spare someone. If not, Sanders can sit with him and trade out with someone else from Muriel’s office. Even if Mano sends someone, tell him I either want him there or someone else he trusts. I want him talking to Josh before the feds or the cops get ahold of him.”
