Jake was the best thing to ever happen to her. During her darkest times, she would have given up, had it not been for him. He was her everything. Tears pricked her eyes as she thought about him being so far away. Even though she knew it was good for him to get away – especially from Nathan’s influence.
‘Stop staring at me, Mum. I’m only going to Leeds, and I’ll be home every weekend, so you can do my washing.’ He winked.
She knew that right then he really thought he’d be home every weekend. But she also knew that soon his life would be taken up with studying and all the new and interesting people he would meet, just as it should be, and he would visit her less and less. But that was okay. That’s what she wanted for him. To be unrestricted. To have no ties; no responsibilities; just to work hard and enjoy himself. She stopped staring at him but continued to steal surreptitious glances at him for the remainder of the film. Her beautiful boy. From the day he was born he’d been her entire world. She’d known then that she would do anything for him; anything to protect him; to make sure that he got to live his life exactly the way he wanted to. Now that Nathan was back in their lives it had only made her more determined to ensure that her son was kept safe from harm. There’d be salmon swimming in the River Mersey before she would allow Nathan to do anything to jeopardize their son’s future.
Chapter Thirty-Seven
Reuben McBride sat in the chair across the desk from Grace in her office. He was a local thug who’d had his knuckles rapped by Patrick a few days earlier for causing a disturbance in the Rose and Crown. Unfortunately for Reuben, his hand was broken in the fracas and he was no longer able to participate as the getaway driver in an armed robbery. A venture that, if successful, would have been incredibly lucrative. He, and his co-conspirators, were incredibly pissed off about this fact, particularly as they’d been planning the job for months.
‘Just what the fuck are you going to do about it then?’ he barked at her.
Grace shrugged. ‘Nothing. You should have thought about the consequences of kicking off in my pub, Reuben.’
‘What?’ he shouted. ‘That ponce refused to serve me. All I did was pull him up on it.’
‘Well, we don’t tolerate that sort of homophobic language, or loutish behaviour in here. You got everything you deserved. And if Patrick had seen you barge your way up these stairs today and into my office then you’d have much more than a broken hand. Now get out.’
