But if she was honest with herself, the probability was that this baby wasn’t even his. It was more than likely Ben’s baby. And the fallout from that was unimaginable.
So, there she was, alone. She’d spoken with a doctor and two nurses a few minutes ago. They wanted to assess her mental capacity to make such a decision. That was a laugh, she thought. Anyone with half a brain should have been able to tell she was merely a shell of a human being. But they didn’t. In a few moments, they would call her back in, give her some tablets to take and then send her on her merry way. It would all be over – just like that. She knew without a doubt that the guilt of the decision would hang over her, haunting her. She would never escape it; and she didn’t want to. As far as she was concerned, she should be reminded every day of the life she was so carelessly tossing aside.
Chapter Fifty-Eight
Present Day
Sean looked up from his laptop as Grace walked through the doors of Grazia’s. A plate of uneaten pasta sat on the table beside him. It was Monday afternoon and the restaurant was quiet. He always did the books then.
‘Unless you’re here to tell me your ex-husband is currently having his heart carved out with a spoon, or is already pushing up the daisies, I’m busy,’ he snapped.
‘Not yet, unfortunately,’ she said as she took a seat on the chair opposite him.
‘Then why are you here, Grace?’
‘Have you seen your dad today?’ she asked, ignoring his question.
He sighed. ‘Yeah. He still looks terrible. He’ll probably be in a wheelchair for a long time. He’ll fucking hate that.’
Grace nodded. ‘I know.’
‘He’s insisting on signing himself out in a few days though.’
‘I know,’ she repeated.
He looked at her. ‘You could have put a stop to all this a long time ago. You know that, don’t you?’
Sighing, Grace looked at him intently. ‘Don’t start. I feel bad enough already. I don’t need this from you.’
‘You don’t need this?’ he snapped. ‘My dad will never be the same again after what happened. All because of your psychopathic ex-husband.’
