She wrapped her arms around him as he sobbed. This great hulk of a man, this hard man, weeping like a frightened child. His shoulders moved rhythmically up and down with each sob. She kissed him on the top of his head because she couldn’t think of anything else to comfort him. To show the frightened little boy in him that he was loved. Despite all that he was and all that he had done, she loved him still. Loved him and hated him in equal measure. But she had never been more afraid of him than she was at that moment.
It was as though someone had shone a torch into the dark recesses of her brain. Finally, she realized that it wasn’t her who made him angry. It wasn’t that she’d said the wrong thing, dressed too provocatively or asked too many questions. It was him; all him. His true nature was the violent monster and not the charming, caring man she’d fallen in love with. The monster was the side of him which he was constantly trying to suppress, but the one who would always win out in the end.
In that moment, she felt such pity for him. To have to live your life like that, never knowing true happiness, knowing that you could only be whole when you were hurting someone else.
He looked up at her then as if he was reading her mind. She saw the fear in his eyes.
‘Please don’t leave me,’ he pleaded.
‘I’m not going anywhere, Nathan,’ she told him.
‘Promise me you’ll never leave me, Grace. Promise me.’
So, she promised him. Because, despite how much she wanted to, she couldn’t see a way she could ever escape him.
Chapter Fifty-One
Present Day
The scalding hot water ran over Grace’s body. She’d jumped into the shower as soon as she’d got home after her visit to Nathan at his club. It had been tougher than she’d thought it would be, to smile at him and pretend that to even be in his company didn’t want to make her vomit. But to allow him to touch her, to touch him and pretend that it didn’t make her want to tear her own skin from her body, it had taken every ounce of strength she had. But it would be worth it. The quickest way to Nathan’s heart was through his trousers.
