‘I was sure I had a lead on the Carter twins, but it was a dead end. I swear they’ve disappeared off the face of the fucking earth.’
Nathan shook his head. ‘Did you speak to Joey the Grass, like I told you to.’
John nodded. ‘’Course I did, and he folded like a wet Echo. But he knows fuck all, mate.’
Nathan took a cigarette from his pocket and lit up. ‘Well maybe they’ve fucked off somewhere never to return? Their arl fella’s gone too. So, that’s all fine by me.’
John stared at him. ‘I’m surprised you’re letting this go so easily. A few months ago, you were ready to wear their skins as a coat. Are you getting soft in your old age?’ he laughed.
‘Nah. I just have more important things to think about.’ He shrugged.
‘Well I’m not complaining, boss. I could do without the aggro myself to be honest.’
Nathan sat on his leather chair and pulled a bottle of Scotch from his desk drawer. ‘Fancy one?’ he asked.
‘It’s a bit early isn’t it? Even for you?’
‘I’m celebrating.’ Nathan smiled.
‘Go on then,’ John conceded. ‘What are we celebrating?’
Nathan poured them both a generous measure of Scotch. ‘I’ve finally figured out what I want in life.’
‘You didn’t know before then?’ John laughed.
Nathan shook his head. ‘Nope. Thought I did. But I was wrong. Wrong about everything.’
‘Fucking hell, mate,’ John laughed. ‘Have you been on the weed as well this morning?’
Taking a swig of his whisky, he smiled. ‘Just because I’ve had an epiphany, John, doesn’t mean you can take the piss.’
‘I wouldn’t dare. But I am worried you’re getting a bit soft in your old age, mate.’
‘I’m not fucking old. And yes, I might be getting a bit soft, but I still need a bit of action now and then. Speaking of action, you should see this new dancer who’s started at the club. She can do things with her body that would make your eyes water.’
‘You never change, do you?’ John laughed.
‘Nope.’ Nathan smirked as he downed the rest of his whisky.
But it was all bravado. He had no interest at all in the new dancer at the club. There was only one woman who occupied his thoughts – and that was Grace.
