Jake and his mates left once the band had finished, off to find somewhere more exciting. Nathan remained though, and sat at the bar, enjoying the free whisky and the view. He watched Grace all night, the way she moved effortlessly behind the bar, like she was born to be there. It was obvious it was her place. He admired the curve of her arse in the tight pencil skirt she wore. She’d developed a habit of pulling her long hair over to one side, leaving the right side of her neck exposed. It made him hard just thinking about kissing her there, having his face buried in her neck, and what he was usually doing at the time.
He thought of all the beautiful women he knew. Kayleigh was sitting at home waiting for him. She was undeniably gorgeous, but she’d never held the same pull for him that Grace did. None of them had. He’d tried to convince himself that he was over her, that he could make it work with Kayleigh, but Grace was like a drug to him. And the more she seemed not to want him, the more he needed to have her.
When she hadn’t been around earlier, he’d been surprised by how much it affected him. Maybe he should stop being such a prick and tell her that he was bluffing about Jake? Tell her that he would never do that to his own son. Ask her to give them another chance. Tell her that he would never hurt her again, if she would just take him back. He almost laughed out loud. What the fuck was wrong with him? It must have been the old place messing with his head. Even he knew that was a promise he couldn’t keep.
When closing time came, he was desperate to touch her, to run his hands over her bare skin, to taste her.
‘I’ll help Grace close up,’ he told the three bar staff who were left. ‘You can get off home.’
They all looked at her, seeking her approval. She was the boss after all, not him. Not anymore.
‘Yes, go on,’ she smiled at them.
Nathan practically pushed them out of the door.
Chapter Seventy
Nathan closed the heavy front doors as he let out the last of Grace’s staff, fastening the huge steel bolt behind them. The noise echoed around the empty pub. She imagined that was what a prison cell door sounded like when it was closed and she winced at the irony.
