The words sounded perfect in his head, but when they came out they were slow and heavy. He didn’t understand any of it. Now Grace was leaving; she said goodbye and Ben was kissing her, kissing his Grace. He wanted to jump off this sofa and rip Ben’s fucking head off. With every fibre of his being he wanted to hurt them both, but he couldn’t.

Grace was gone then and Ben, that traitorous bastard, sat on the coffee table just in front of him.

‘So you want to know what’s going on?’ he asked Nathan with a smile on his face ‘Well, I’ll be happy to tell you.’

He told Nathan all about him and Grace. How they’d been seeing each other behind his back while he was inside. How Ben hoped they’d have a chance to be together once Nathan was out of the picture.

Jesus Christ, they really were going to fucking kill him! He had to get out of there. Nathan was filled with an all-consuming rage. His entire body shook. Even his brain rattled in his head. His body was on fire. He felt like he would quite literally explode if he didn’t move soon. He wanted so desperately to smash Ben’s face to a pulp. To break every bone in his former best mate’s treacherous body; and then do the same to that slut of an ex-wife of his. But no matter how hard he tried, he could not fucking move.

‘Do you think you can cross me and get away with it, you fucking bastard?’ Nathan growled. ‘I will end you and that slut. She’ll be sorry she ever met you. Sorry she ever met me.’

Ben started to laugh then and shook his head. ‘I think she’s already sorry she met you, mate. I was happy to put a bullet in your head, but she wanted to make sure there was no comeback for either of us. I think she probably wanted you to suffer too. She asked me to help her pull this off and I was more than happy to. No one will ever know she was involved.’

Ben was still talking but Nathan was slipping in and out of consciousness, and he only heard some of what was being said. It seemed like he was underwater. It was as though he was swimming through a thick soup. He caught the odd word still, heard accident and fire, and then he heard nothing except the sound of his own heartbeat.
