As much as he’d hated prison, Nathan knew that doing that long stretch had probably saved his life. He’d been out of control and doing so much Charlie that he didn’t care about anything or anyone. He was reckless. That’s how he ended up inside; and if he hadn’t, he was sure he’d have ended up with a bullet in his head instead.
He’d had it pretty good inside. As far as anyone could anyway. There were plenty of people who wanted to be associated with him and follow his orders. He still managed to run things from inside. He spent his first year in the seg because he couldn’t swallow his pride, and he fought with anyone and everyone who crossed his path. But being in there for so long gave him the opportunity to get clean for the first time in his adult life. His mind became sharper than it had ever been. Even the nightmares stopped after the first rough couple of months. And as he’d been stuck in a cell on his own, he’d been able to scream and shout without someone looking at him like he’d grown an extra head.
He’d forgotten how smart he was, always one step ahead of everyone else. He’d thought the drugs had made him quicker, stronger, but he realized they had actually dulled his senses. So, thanks to his reputation, his skill for business, and his loyal workforce, he built himself a solid empire to come out to. No longer frittering his money away on a flash lifestyle, he’d netted himself a small fortune. He was fucking loaded. He had it all. The fancy waterfront pad. The nice car. Tailored suits. Attractive young blonde on his arm. He was a respectable club manager – soon-to-be owner. No one could touch him.
There was no way he was going back to prison though. He realized why people like his old mate, Tommy McNulty, had other people doing the grunt work for them. It was so they never ended up inside. And, if you did things right, people were too scared, or too loyal, to ever grass you up. He had learned that was how to do business; maintain the presentation of a respected businessman, and let other people get their hands dirty on your behalf.
