Later, even with my headphones on, I could hear Amy’s exaggerated moans of pleasure as they had sex next door. Bitch. It was for my benefit and it felt like I was having my heart removed with a spoon. I think Ben had deliberately delayed her spending the night for that very reason. He didn’t want to rub it in my face that he was with someone else. I tossed and turned, but there was no chance of sleep. My phone buzzed; it was a text from Ian.

How was dinner?

I opened the app and saw him sat on the sofa in front of the television, drinking a bottle of beer. I wasn’t sure whether to respond, but watching him continuously check his phone made me cave in.

Painful!

Want me to come over?

I’m already in bed.

I’ll be right there 😊

I dropped the phone in panic and it bounced on the carpet, knocking over a glass of water I kept by my bed. I rushed to get my towel from the bathroom to soak up the excess liquid seeping into the carpet. My heart raced, had I just invited him here? Into my bed? God no. The screen of my phone had locked, but I could see another message from Ian had come through. I keyed in my code, stumbling over the digits.

I’m just kidding

I let out a sigh and waited for the shakes to subside. My stomach churned like I’d been on a roller coaster. I knew I had to text back, I didn’t want to leave it too long but was unsure what to write. My phone beeped again.

Have I scared you off?

Yes, was the true answer. As I was typing a reply another message came through.

I’m sorry about that bloke. He pissed me off and I lost it.

It’s okay,

I replied quickly, although it wasn’t.

Too much going on at work. Feeling the pressure. Need to let off some steam.

I understand.

I’m looking forward to dinner.

He signed off with a kiss and I held down the icon of the PetCam app, deleting it from my phone. I didn’t want to watch him any more. I wasn’t sure I wanted anything to do with him.

Sunday 28 January 2018

I shudder as though someone has walked over my grave. The hairs on my arm stand to attention. He has a criminal record? He was known to them?

‘No, I didn’t know,’ I whisper.
