What can you tell me about the guests? he said. What do they do here?

They come here to enjoy themselves, escape their regular lives. Its like a paradise out in the desert.

You sound like a brochure. Whats really going on, Emily? I may be old enough to be your father, but Im not an idiot. A bunch of rich, middle-aged men mingling with college girls… It doesnt take a genius to guess whats happening behind the scenes.

She shrugged, looking defensive. Its not as bad as it sounds. We get paid well.

The words hit Callaway like a slap. He winced.

And were treated well, she added, noticing his pained expression. Then her face clouded. For the most part.

For the most part? Did someone try to hurt you?

She stepped back, running a hand restlessly through her purple-black hair. He wasnt trying to. He just…he was a little too eager.

Callaways voice was firm. Emily, you dont have to defend him. If youre in danger here

It was just once or twice. She bit her lip. He said…he said he could make me disappear. If I didnt do what he wanted.

Callaways heart sank. Im going to kill him with my bare hands, he thought.

Youre doing great, Emily, he told her. Can you tell me his name?

His name is Cesare something. She frowned, trying to remember the surname. It was something unusual. I dont really know much about himits not like we have long conversations.

No, Callaway thought darkly. I bet he prefers something a little different from talking.

Thats good, Emily. Thats good. When was he here last?

Hes here now. Staying through the weekend, I think.

Callaway nodded gratefully. Thank you, Emily. I cant tell you how helpful youve been.

And this stays between us? Everything I said?

It wont get back to Cesare, or to Roth, Callaway promised, and meant it.

As he walked away, Emily called his name. Her heels clicked on the tiled floor as she raced to catch up.

I remember it now, she said, excited. His name is Cesare Ferrero.

She frowned, studying Callaway with concern. Are you alright, Agent Callaway?

He smiled weakly. Just a little too much sunlight, he answered. Thanks again, Emily.

He walked out to search for Harley, his heart hammering in his chest. It was time to pay Ferrero a visit.

CHAPTER TWENTY

Whats taking him so long? Harley wondered, leaning against the wall as she watched the door for Callaway to emerge. Already she could sense the tension in the air. These rich socialites didnt care to have a couple of federal agents poking around. It made them nervous. Sooner or later, she sensed, Roth would decide theyd riled up his guests enough and ask them to leave, and there was no telling when they would be allowed back in.
