And I think she's lying to us, Harley answered. I know bullshit when I smell it. They went somewhere together, somewhere that probably led to Lisa getting killed. And did you see how Candy reacted when I asked about the phone?

Closed up like a clam, Callaway agreed. Then again, who would want to turn over their phone to a couple of strangers?

If it might help bring justice for a murdered friend? I'd sacrifice my privacy for that.

Callaway stared up at the house, thinking. If she won't give us permission to look at the phone, we'll have to get a warrant. We're not breaking the rules here.

Harley suspected someone must have warned Callaway about her unconventional methods. So long as they got results, however, she didnt mind playing by the rules. It was only when the rules worked against finding the truth, rather than for it, that she found it necessary to break them.

Then a different idea occurred to her. What about the victims phones? You dont need a warrant for them. Were they ever found?

They were, actually. Weve been trying to hack into themsometimes even state-of-the-art software takes time. Ill check on Ray and see how hes doing.

Harley knew there were concerns about the abuse of this technology, but she for one was grateful for it. Searching those phones could make their jobs much easier.

Callaway backed out of the driveway and drove toward the gate.

What about you? he asked. Something tells me you're not going to twiddle your thumbs.

She frowned, considering. We need to learn more about those mineshow many there are, where theyre located, anything to help us get into the killers head. My brothers been working at the Chino Mine for years, so he may be able to point us in the right direction.

Callaway nodded. Sounds like a plan.

As they drove away, however, Harley was not thinking about mines. She was thinking about the look on Candys facethat flash of panic when Harley said Jake had followed her and Lisa.

What did you do to that poor girl? Harley thought.

CHAPTER TEN

Harley tapped her fingers on the edge of the swing, waiting for Greg to answer his phone.

Yucca Park had been updated since the last time Harley had been there with Kelly years ago new slide, new jungle gym, new iron fence around the perimeter but the swings were the same. As Harley leaned back on the familiar seat, she remembered joking with Kelly about how they would kick the sun out of the sky.

So much had happened since then. Was Kelly still alive, somewhere out there? And if so, what kind of woman had she grown into?

Greg answered on the third ring, raising his voice over the rumble of heavy machinery in the background.
