The words rankled Harleyshe felt like she could be talking with Lloyd back at Quantico. And youre dragging your feet. She could already be booking tickets out of the countryshe certainly has the money.

What if youre wrong? What if she has nothing to do with this?

It would be a hell of a coincidence.

Callaway waggled his head side to side. Maybe, or maybe not. Lisa didnt have many friends, sure, but Theresa was a social butterfly. Its not crazy to imagine they might have had one friend in common.

Harleys hand clamped around the door handle as she tried to keep her anger from seeping into her voice and face. How could Callaway be so obtuse?

Im telling you, Callaway, she knows something. If she is the killer, we cant afford to let her slip through our hands. Most countries may have extradition treaties with the U.S., but plenty dont. If we let her get away now

Okay, okay! he said, raising his hands as if to defend himself from further arguments. Youre like a dog with a bone, you know that?

Harley smiled. I appreciate the compliment.

It wasnt a compliment.

He paused. Harley waited in agonizing silence, afraid to hope for a miracle.

Tell you what, he continued. I want to look into something. If I cant disprove your hypothesis, well bring Candy in. Deal?

Harley hesitated, then nodded. Just as long as you understand were working on borrowed time.

You dont need to keep reminding me. There was a note of annoyance in his voice.

Harley thought he needed constant reminders, given his deliberate pace, but she decided she had done enough prodding for one conversation.

Whats your idea? she said.

He fired up his truck. Im going to prove Candy isnt our killer.

I sure hope youre wrong about this, Harley thought. Because if Callaway was right, that meant they were back to square one.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Youve got to be kidding, Harley muttered, shading her eyes as she stared up at the canyon. This is your idea? Retracing our steps?

She had hoped Callaway would come up with something original, a fresh lead to inject new purpose into the case. Instead they were back at the place she had met him.

Humor me, Callaway answered with a pleasant smile. Besides, its another chance to work on your tan. That east coast sun hasnt done you any favors.

Callaway began climbing the long trail up the canyon. Muttering under her breath, Harley took a few moments to tighten her laces, tie her hair back, and mentally prepare herself for a lot of sweating in the next few hours. Her calves still ached from chasing Medrano the previous night, not to mention her earlier climb up this very same canyon. At this pace, she would be bedridden within a few days.
