She pushed him forward, ignoring for now the woman hidden by the bed. There were plenty of officers to interview her as well as everyone else on the property. Harley had eyes only for Roth.
Callaway followed her outside. He watched grimly as she guided Roth into the backseat of her car.
You coming for the interrogation? she asked Callaway. Or are you sticking around for the search?
Hell, yeah, Im coming, he answered, cracking his knuckles. I wouldnt miss this for the world.
CHAPTER TWENTY SIX
Harley studied Roth through the one-way mirror, wondering if his face was the last one those three young women had seen. He looked at ease, comfortable, as if he knew it was only a matter of time before he was released. It gave Harley that much more incentive to bury him.
My guess? Callaway said. He doesnt say a word till his lawyers arrive.
Maybe, Harley allowed. Or maybe he just cant wait to spill the beans. Maybe he wants to tell us how it felt. Either way, we cant depend on the forensic team finding any evidence at the villa. Without a confession, this could all be a grand waste of time.
Callaway shook his head at her in amazement. You really have no idea what we just accomplished, do you? We just connected more than twenty of the countrys most powerful men with a prostitution ring run by that man right there. Every politician, lawyer, and CEO across the country who thought he was above the law is going to have to think twice now.
Harley tried to appreciate this achievement, tried to focus on the positives, but it simply wasnt enoughnot for those murdered girls, not for her.
Hes going down, Callaway insisted. One way or the other, Roth is going to prison. It doesnt matter how good his lawyers arehe cant shake this.
Harley nodded, but she felt far away. She had seen too many prosecutors make deals with killers when the evidence was shaky because they reasoned a light sentence was better than no sentence at all. The goal was not to make Roths life miserable, but to prove his guilt for those girls deaths in a court of law, where the families could at least have the closure of seeing the killer sentenced and led away in handcuffs.
That would never happen if they didnt find a clearer way to link him to the murders.
And what about the victims families, Callaway? Harley said. What do we tell them: The case is still open, but thats okay because we think the murderer is behind bars?
Callaway ran a hand wearily through his hair. We have Candys testimony, for starters. That puts the victims on Roths property.
