What can I do for you, boss? he said as he answered. He kept his gaze on Lucas, who was looking on with a smug expression as Harley contacted the hospital.

How well do you know your way around Cibola National Forest? Newbury said.

Pretty well, Id say.

I need you over there pronto.

Has there been a new development? Callaway asked.

You could say that, Newbury replied. Local PD just found another body.

Shit, Callaway muttered as he ended the call. He lifted his hat and ran a hand through his cropped hair. A sense of guilt was creeping up on him, and he knew that the longer this case went on and the more bodies they found, the heavier that guilt would weigh on him.

They needed to catch the killer soonbefore he murdered any more young women.

Well, Harley said on a long sigh as she closed her phone, looks like his alibi checks out. She studied him more closely. Whats wrong?

Weve got a third body, Callaway said, his jaw set in a grim line.

The look of frustration on Harleys face suggested she had feared this very answer.

Am I free to go now, Lucas said, or would you like to do a cavity search?

Youre free to go, Callaway answered.

Lucas grabbed the keys from Harleys hand and shuffled around to his door. Harley stared at Callaway in disbelief.

What are you doing? she demanded. That mans our only suspect, and were just letting him walk?

Hes got a solid alibi. Besides, I dont think hes our guy.

That doesnt mean hes not involved. What about the pool video?

If they were a bunch of teenagers, maybe, Callaway answered. But they werent. That was a swinger party.

She studied him.

Look, he said patiently. I get why you want to put him away. That guys a scumbag for sure. But that doesnt mean hes our killer, and the more time we spend on him, the less time we spend on the actual killer.

Harley watched as Lucas fired up his truck.

You want to book him? Callaway continued. Okay. But Im more concerned about the killer whos out there dropping bodies.

Harley watched the truck pull away. She let out a long, weary sigh.

Callaway placed a hand on Harleys shoulder as a sense of righteous anger built inside him. Were going to catch this guy, he assured her. He may have killed three women, but Ill be damned before I let him kill a fourth.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

This changes the game, Harley said as the uniformed officer waved them through the checkpoint. Ahead of them, the side of the hill blazed with the flashing lights of several police cars and two ambulances. Officers and paramedics milled about, most of them wearing hardhats, talking in low voices and tracking Callaways pickup with curious eyes.
