Those six numbers are the passcode, right? Harley said.

Yes, Ray answered slowly. Its right there at the bottom of the screen.

Harley squinted at the numbers, repeating them inside her head. Then she unplugged the phone and unlocked it. She and Callaway needed to search Candys phone, but that didnt mean Ray needed to tag along just for his own amusement.

Hey! Ray said, a wounded expression on his face. I had it right here on the screen!

Thanks, pal, Callaway said, clapping the younger man on the shoulder. Ill be sure to put in a good word for you. I see big things in your future.

Ray looked crestfallen. Yeah, whatever. Then his eyes brightened. But youll let me know if you find anything juicy, right?

Dont push your luck! Harley called as she stepped into the hallway and began scrolling through the phone. It was a treasure trove of information. There were links to Candys social media accounts, as well as numerous text messages and email chains. She found nothing, however, that suggested why Candy would run, not to mention tossing her phone along the side of the road. It was the act of a panicked person, which only gave Harley more reason to suspect Candy was hiding something.

Anything interesting? Callaway said, peering over her shoulder.

Harley pursed her lips in a thoughtful frown. One place keeps coming up. She just refers to it as the Ranch. Apparently its owned by some billionaire.

Is it off Highway Forty?

Harley glanced at him, surprised. You know what shes talking about?

Some years back, this reclusive billionaire moved out here. Bought a huge parcel of land along Highway Forty, and hes pretty much been a ghost since then. Why he had to come out this way, I dont know. Theres plenty of land in California.

Because this is a place where nothing happens, Harley thought. Or so I used to think.

Are you sure this is the same guy? she said.

Callaway gave her a blank stare. How many billionaires do you think there are in New Mexico?

Fair point. She was silent for a moment as she continued to scan through Candys messages. What do you say we head over and talk to him?

Callaway pressed his lips together in an expression of reluctance. Its not going to be easy. I dont even know the mans namethats how quiet he keeps things.

Then well just have to persuade him to talk, Harley answered, slipping the phone into her pocket.

One way or the other, she thought.

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Harleys heart sank as they rode through the desert, more convinced with every passing mile they were lost.
